Studio Ghibli’s The Boy and the Heron won the BAFTA for the best animated film, but not every fan is happy with the decision.
The Boy and the Heron was in talks lately for the breathtaking elements it brought to the table. After winning several awards and grabbing a number of nominations, the anime film surprised us once again. Yes, we are talking about its win at the BAFTA Awards 2024 for the Best Animated Film category.
Coming from one of the most celebrated directors, Hayao Miyazaki, and the renowned animation studio Studio Ghibli, the anime film was loved by the majority of the enthusiasts. Despite it being complicated for many to understand, there’s no denying that it is an amazing piece of art.
Also, it’s worth mentioning that now that the anime film has earned a Golden Globe and BAFTA, its chance to grab an Oscar has also increased.
Several fans question The Boy and the Heron’s BAFTA win
Studio Ghibli’s The Boy and the Heron was nominated at the BAFTA Awards 2024 alongside several masterpieces like Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and Elemental. The ones who loved the film were on their toes to see the film grab the award, and it luckily happened. However, after the winners were announced, fans took it to social media and Reddit, eventually making it a hot topic for debate.

A Reddit user says that Ghibli has earned a huge name over the years, and that makes every project coming from it a hit. They also add that the enthusiasts are so busy giving the mainstream studios a priority that they often end up ignoring the creations of other production houses.
Another user states that they have watched Suzume and The Boy and the Heron, and even though they are not entirely pleased with the former, they find it to be better than the latter. Besides that, a few fanatics reveal that Slam Dunk and Suzume are much easier to understand than The Boy and the Heron.
So, even though many anime fans are actually happy that The Boy and the Heron bagged a BAFTA win, there’s a huge portion of the community that thinks the award is just for the fan service.
