Theories were sparked in Apex Legends after a new Wattson skin hinted that the character was actually not fully human after all, but a developer has now weighed in to clarify.
Wattson was released back with the launch of Season 2 and was instantly a fan-favorite, not just for her abilities but even more so for her personality.
A sweet and innocent character, Wattson’s father designed the Apex Games, and so she grew up in the arena she now dominates. But, some fan theories have speculated that, in a Pinnochio-like twist, she isn’t a real girl at all.
These rumors started all the way back when the character was first released, as fans wondered: “could it be that her ‘father’ built her as his ‘daughter’ to help him put together the Arena/finish his work as he died?”
It was certainly a plausible theory, and one that got the lore fanatics very intrigued. Other hints such as always wearing a hood also sparked speculation, and one player noticed a Hammond logo on her neck thanks to a 3rd person glitch. This appears only when wearing the Cybernetic Security skin.
However, these are just skins, and could be totally unrelated to Wattson’s backstory. Despite this, her new Season 4 skin, ‘Cyberpunked’, instantly sparked the rumors again.

Cyberpunk as a genre is known for these kinds of robotic body mods. Still, it was inevitable that some players would take this as further proof that Wattson is actually a synthetic of some kind.
Respawn developer shuts down rumor
However, killing any speculation before it got started, Respawn artist Jeremy Jodoin clarified that the new skin for Wattson was just that; a skin.
After a player asked “do you think Wattson’s robotic legs are purely for the theme of the skin or telling us more about what she really is?”, Jodoin responded, “yeah it’s just a skin my dude.”
So, for anyone hoping Wattson was actually a man-made creation, it looks like disappointing news. Though for everyone else, who likes to think of her as a sweet and innocent (and deadly) character, there’s nothing to worry about.
We already have both Pathfinder and Revenant to battle it out for king of the robots, and the possibilities for more in the future are endless.
