A host of new hints and data mined leaks have surfaced which suggest the new weapon for Season 4 of Apex Legends will be the Volt SMG.

Every season of Apex Legends so far has added in a new character as the main attraction, but a new weapon is also a guarantee. As many players will stick with their ‘main’ Legend, the new weapon is often the most interesting part.

So far, each additional weapon has been met with a mixed response. The L-Star is only available in care packages, but players don’t think it’s really strong enough to justify it, and the Charge Rifle was quickly nerfed after it was added for Season 3.

For Season 4, set to start on February 4, it’s expected that Respawn will finally add a new SMG. This was actually speculated for Season 3 as well, but of course, the Charge Rifle took its place.

Previously, leaks have hinted that either the CAR or the Volt SMG would be the new weapon. But, since the Grand Soirée Arcade update, it seems even more likely that the Volt will be coming next season.

Respawn tease the Volt?

The first clue actually comes from Respawn themselves. In the patch notes for the event, they explain they removed extended energy mags because of something coming in Season 4. Logically, this would be a new energy weapon – such as the Volt.

Leaked game files for Volt SMG in Apex Legends

Beyond this possible hint from Respawn, there are also leaks from the actual game files too. Renowned data miner That1MiningGuy has been busy digging through the files post-update, and has come across some intriguing additions.

The leaker explains that files previously codenamed ‘Hemlok_SMG’ is now being renamed properly – to “smg_volt”. These game files appear to be for various weapon skins and models.

We already know what the Volt will look like, as That1MiningGuy leaked some of these models way back in September 2019.

This is when we first thought it would be the new weapon for Season 3, but clearly it was skipped over for the Charge Rifle instead.

The Volt was a powerful SMG in the Titanfall series, and would certainly be a big shakeup to the current meta. The R-99 still reigns supreme in the SMG category, but hopefully, the Volt can give it a run for its money.

We’ll have to wait until Season 4 is officially here to find out though. Who knows, maybe this is another diversion, and Respawn have a different new weapon lined up.
