During your journey in Baldur’s Gate 3, you may find the need to reassess and adjust your party’s classes, races, and attributes to better face your adversaries. This guide offers an in-depth look at customizing your companions in-game.
After a three-year early access journey, Baldur’s Gate 3 received a stellar launch and even won the Game of the Year. Players are now beginning their Dungeons & Dragons quest, choosing to band together in multiplayer mode or undertake the adventure alone with the game’s companions.
With such a wide array of monsters and foes to come up against in Baldur’s Gate 3’s world, naturally, some characters will be more effective than others in certain battles, so there may come a time when you want to switch out your party members.
With that in mind, here’s exactly how to change your party in Baldur’s Gate 3.
How to change your party in Baldur’s Gate 3
In Baldur’s Gate 3, you can have up to 4 active party members at a time, your Tav, Durge, or Origin character included. That means you’ll need to swap people out if you add a new teammate or want to travel with a different lineup. When they aren’t in the party, companions will wait in Camp, where you can add them to the party.
Originally, players needed to manually dismiss a party member before they could add a different one. Fortunately, Patch 6 added the option to dismiss party members while speaking to the companion you wish to add.

If you want to change your party and switch in waiting teammates, follow the steps below:
- Travel to camp either via fast travel or by selecting the option to ‘take a long rest’ from the mini-map menu.
- After you arrive at camp, talk to any non-active party member and ask them to invite them to join you.
- If your party is already full, they will ask you to swap someone out. Pick who you want to dismiss.
- Once this is done your party will be changed!
If you ask a lower-level character to join your party, they will automatically receive an XP boost to make up for any additional experience the rest of your party has received since you last encountered them. This is a fantastic mechanic as it saves you from having to worry about grinding to get your new party member up to the same level as the rest of the group.
