The Baldur’s Gate 3 cast might consist of loveable rogues, but they still have an annoying knack for running into dangerous spell AoEs, even after all of the updates the game has received to date.
Mastering AoE and distance is important for playing a spellcaster in Baldur’s Gate 3. The main benefit of an arsenal of spells is the ability to strike multiple foes at once with a single attack, so you have to be careful to avoid hitting allies.
While most D&D players know to keep out of a spell’s damage range, the same can’t be said for the AI-controlled party members in Baldur’s Gate 3. It took several patches to teach them how to jump properly, but they still sometimes fling themselves into the line of fire.
One spell in particular is causing problems, as discussed by users on the BG3 Reddit. The spell is Moonbeam, a powerful Druid spell that causes a beam of damaging light to shine down from the sky, hurting anyone it touches. Unfortunately, this includes party members, who keep accidentally entering its AoE.
“I really hope they fix this in Patch 7, it’s almost as bad as walking in fire was back last year,” one user wrote, while another said, “This and cloud of daggers. I swear to god. Enemies know to get out of it when I cast it on them, so why don’t you?”

“This reminds me of how often they run through my Cloud of Daggers,” another user wrote, “I always have to stop concentrating on it as fast as possible because they and any ally NPC just run straight through it after combat and then get mad at me.”
Luckily, some enemies also succumb to AI pathfinding errors. “I once had a combat where Khaga cast moonbeam and walked into it on the same turn. Twice.”
Moonbeam has also caused problems in other areas of the game, as it can strike through multiple floors at once, making it annoying to use in buildings. This is a shame, as it’s one of the best low-level Druid spells in the game.
The developers of Baldur’s Gate 3 aren’t finished with the game just yet, with more content and patches in the pipeline. Hopefully, there will be an AI update that will finally stop the party from going moonbathing.
