A Baldur’s Gate 3 glitch is amusing players by showing a Mage Hand someone acting as the leader of the party.
In a game as massive as Baldur’s Gate 3, it’s no surprise there are some bugs.
Following the recent release of Patch 6, players have reported numerous new issues that seem to have been introduced alongside the update’s widely praised quality-of-life fixes.
Some of these bugs, though, are more amusing than game-breaking, including one shared to Reddit in which a cantrip accidentally became the party leader.
Baldur’s Gate 3 bug puts Lae’zel’s Mage Hand in charge
Reddit user Nindo_99 shared a screenshot to the BaldursGate3 subreddit showing that it’s possible to trigger dialogue with the spectral hand created using the Mage Hand cantrip.
As they explain, “Tried to grab the Umbral Gem at Yurgir with Laezel’s invisible Mage Hand but I did not expect this…” alongside an image of the glowing hand somehow speaking to Yurgir.

How the Mage Hand communicates is unclear, as are the consequences of getting into a fight with just a spectral hand.
It’s possible this bug is connected to one of Patch 6’s big changes: prioritizing the player’s avatar. Dialogue that triggers automatically is supposed to use your avatar as the main speaker wherever possible.
However, with the party presumably waiting from a distance for the Mage Hand to stealthily get the job done, it seems the game got confused and triggered the dialogue with the cantrip. A similar thing happened to a player recently when Gale died near Scratch, causing a projection to explain how to resurrect him to the dog.
Since developer Larian Studios has already released three Hotfixes since Patch 6 to address some of its issues, a fix for this bug could be coming soon. Until then, though, players don’t seem too bothered.
As one said, “I, for one, bow to our new mage hand overlords.”
