New reports suggest that the 2019 edition of the immensely popular first-person-shooter series Call of Duty will not be called Modern Warfare 4 as first believed, but rather just Modern Warfare, as Infinity War attempt a “soft reboot” on the franchise.
With the announcement confirming the latest addition to the Call of Duty franchise thought to be imminent, many CoD fans are desperate for any news regarding the game as we inch closer and closer to its fall release.
Now, it appears that the title of the game, which many believed to be locked in as Modern Warfare 4, will, in fact, simply be called Modern Warfare.
First reported by Kotaku’s Jason Schreier, the game will drop the numerical value at the end and simply be referred to as Modern Warfare, much like Advanced Warfare or Infinite Warfare, two of the more recent Call of Duty offerings.
The decision to name the game Modern Warfare and not Modern Warfare 4 will likely cause confusion among older fans of the franchise, who will remember the similarly titled Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, which released back in 2007.
It’s possible that Activision and developers Infinity Ward thought that having CoD4 and MW4 would also cause confusion, so, perhaps, felt that losing the number may help those who could be confused as to which game is the newest.
I can confirm this is true, and that it's hilarious. The first one was "Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare" so obviously the fourth one is "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare." Video games are absurd https://t.co/Ghb1m2srC4

Schreier also suggests that Modern Warfare will be a “soft reboot” for the series, meaning we may not see some of our favorite characters from the game’s history in the new title when it releases.

While Infinity Ward employees have dropped hints about the upcoming game, we are yet to see any official announcement about the game from either the developers or Activision – the publishers of the series.
It’s possible that the release of this new information may be a precursor to an upcoming teaser or the official starting point of the game’s marketing.
Call of Duty games are generally announced in May or June, so it seems like we won’t have long to wait until we find out what the actual name of the game is.
