The popular Call of Duty franchise may be heading back to its roots with boots on the ground gameplay in Modern Warfare, but it looks like we might also be seeing a fresh take on the Battle Royale genre.
Marking their first title since Call of Duty Infinite Warfare in 2016, developers Infinity Ward look to be hitting the reset button on the global phenomenon with the upcoming Modern Warfare release. Emphasizing grounded combat and a more methodical pace for the multiplayer shooter.
With the public beta having launched on September 19, one line of code in the game files alluding to a Battle Royale mode, appears to have slipped through the cracks.
In a Tweet on the very same day as the beta-launch, YouTuber TheGamingRevolution has allegedly sifted through the code and discovered a line pertaining to an undisclosed Battle Royale mode.
“There we have it, Battle Royale is mentioned in the code of Modern Warfare,” he explained.
With the letters ‘br’ frequent throughout the line of code, the text also includes mention of ‘money drops’ and ‘player drops,’ likely alluding to functions within the mode itself.
While no official details have been released about the inclusion of a Battle Royale mode in Modern Warfare, with the title releasing on October 25, it’s likely that we’ll get confirmation in the very near future.

There we have it, Battle Royale is mentioned in the code of Modern Warfare. This must be the money / plunder system I was talking about. Send this to any of the naysayers. pic.twitter.com/kkxrxSYa3q
