If you’re still hoping to see Call of Duty’s Blackout Battle Royale mode introduce the option to play cross-platform, you should probably stop holding your breath.
Treyarch’s David Vonderhaar was playing day one of the Blackout beta release with Michael ‘shroud’ Grzesiek, one of the biggest streamers on Twitch, when the former CS:GO pro asked “is there going to be crossplay for this game?”
Vonderhaar quickly responded in much the same way that he has when asked the question previously, saying “I don’t think so” before elaborating with “I wouldn’t rule anything out but no specific plan”.
Shroud seemed to be happy with the news, saying “okay, that’s good”, but there are sure to be some disappointed players out there that were hoping to have the chance to play with friends on different platforms.
It is unlikely that cross-platform play would even be a conversation if not for Fortnite Battle Royale’s introduction of it in 2018 – the ability to play on a PC or mobile device with friends on Xbox or PlayStation 4 has proven to be a big hit in that game.

While crossplay might be off of the cards for the time being, Vonderhaar doesn’t rule out the possibility of other cool items and rewards being added to the game by Treyarch over time.
When asked by shroud whether they are considering implementing a Twitch Prime loot system, he plays his cards close to his chest but does say “I bet we’ll do all sorts of crazy stuff”.
The ability to link game accounts with Twitch prime accounts, and unlock exclusive Twitch Prime content in the process, has been a popular introduction to games like Overwatch, Fortnite and Rainbow Six Siege.
The first day of the Blackout beta revealed a great deal of information about the game’s future. With the beta set to run until September 17, you can guarantee that we’ll be hearing a whole lot more about Treyarch’s plans over the next few days.
