Duriel is a recurring boss in the Diablo series, but the demon has developed quite a following in the latest game. Here’s everything you need to know about Duriel in Diablo 4.

Duriel is a Lesser Evil, meaning he is a powerful Lord of Hell but in terms of power and status, however, he’s considered less important than Diablo, Baal, and Mephisto, who are collectively known as the Prime Evils. He’s often allied with Andariel, Belial, and Azmodan, his fellow Lesser Evils, who are just as likely to work with the Prime Evils as against them, depending on the circumstances.

The character was first seen in Diablo 2 where he served as a terrifying boss at the end of Act 2, but wasn’t seen again until Diablo 4 when he returned as an Uber Boss that players love to farm for loot and XP. Duriel has become especially popular in Season 3 of Diablo 4 and will likely continue to be so in Season 4.

Who is Duriel in the Diablo series?

While he’s allied with them in the past, Duriel is often at odds with Diablo and the other Prime Evils. In the series lore, Duriel and the other Lesser Evils led a revolt against the Primes and banished them from Hell, becoming its new rulers. However, this was all a ploy by the Primes to materialize in Sanctuary (the world of humans in the Diablo series) and become more powerful by corrupting humanity.

In Diablo 2, Duriel was summoned to Sanctuary by Diablo and allied with him. After Diablo released his brother Baal from the Tomb of Tal Rasha, the Primes left Duriel behind to ambush the band of heroes that were on Diablo’s tail while they rushed to release Mephisto from his prison in Kurast. Duriel attacked the heroes but was defeated and cast back to Hell, as was his sister Andariel.

Belial and Azmodan remained on Sanctuary and continued their own assault on the humans, but were defeated in Diablo 3 by the Nephalem. All souls of the four Lesser Evils were then consumed by Diablo when he turned himself into “The Prime Evil.” In this form, Diablo essentially imprisoned the Lessers and his fellow Primes, but upon his defeat, all of the Lords of Hell were banished back to the fiery pit that spawned them – but were released from Diablo’s control.

Duriel in Diablo 4

In Diablo 4, Duriel has once again turned his back on Diablo and has allied with Lilith in an attempt to overthrow the Prime Evils. This brings him into conflict with the players in Act 6 of the game when Inarius, his Holy warriors, and the protagonist attempt to attack Hell with their army.

While opening a portal from Inarius’s forces, the player characters must first defeat Duriel who attempts to stop them. Once again, the King of Maggots is defeated and cast back into the void where he will need to form himself once again, as a Lord of Hell can never truly be killed, only banished or contained.

The boss battle with Duriel in Diablo 4 is reminiscent of the battle in Diablo 2, but much more epic. It also takes place near where players fought Belial in Diablo 3. However, Duriel has an Uber form that can be summoned and fought during the endgame of Diablo 4.

How to summon Uber Duriel

Uber Duriel can be summoned and fought by performing what’s known as a Ritual of Agony and when you do, prepare for a tough fight. However, Uber Duriel is the only endgame boss in Diablo 4 that can drop Uber Unique items, making the fight well worth your time if you can defeat him.

However, doing so is not a simple task. First, we’d recommend only attempting this fight if you’ve reached level 100 and can comfortably play the game in World Tier IV (or Torment difficulty). You’ll also need certain items obtained from defeating other endgame bosses:

  • Mucus-Slick Eggs: dropped by Varshan
  • Shards of Agony: dropped by Grigoire the Galvanic Saint

You’ll also need to defeat these bosses in World Tier IV for them to drop these items. You’ll also need to farm these items every time you want to summon Uber Duriel.

Once you have these items, make your way to the Gaping Crevasse dungeon in Kehjistan. Once there, battle your way through the dungeon until you reach the Pestilent Altar. Now you can begin your Ritual of Agony, summoning Uber Duriel back to Sanctuary.
