Tfue and Shroud knocked off the top of Twitch viewership by Asmongold

Popular World of Warcraft streamer Asmongold dominated the Twitch charts in August off the back of WoW Classic’s immensely popular launch.

Twitch has recently seen a major shake-up with the launch of WoW Classic, which offers players the chance to relive Blizzard’s immensely popular MMO as it was in its original, pre-expansion state.

As well as the game seeing a massive response from players – so much so that Blizzard have been forced to take several measures to address the incredibly long log-in queues that some have been experiencing – that interest has also spilled over to Twitch, with the World of Warcraft category hitting over 1 million viewers on launch day.

At the forefront of WoW Classic streaming has been Asmongold, a long-time World of Warcraft streamer who has been at the top of the category any time he’s live, peaking at over 300,000 at the game’s release.

Despite only having launched on August 27, however, the incredibly high interest in the game meant that Asmongold – incredibly popular in his own right, but not usually topping the charts – was the most-viewed streamer of the entire month by hours watched, as revealed by StreamElements and SullyGnome.

Beneath Asmongold, the other most-watched names will likely be familiar to frequent Twitch viewers. In the absence of Tyler ‘Ninja’ Blevins, Fortnite pro Turney ‘Tfue’ Tenney reigns supreme as the undisputed king of Epic Games’ enormously popular battle royale on Twitch.

Beneath him, there’s a fairly steep drop off to the rest of the pack, led by former Overwatch pro Felix ‘xQc’ Lengyel and followed closely by Michael ‘shroud’ Grzesiek – who has also dived into WoW Classic since its launch, a decision that might have hurt his viewer and subscriber figures.

Brazilian former CS:GO pro Alexandre ‘Gaules’ Borba rounds out the top five, making him the most-watched non-English speaker on the platform, joined only by German streamer MontanaBlack88 in the top 10.

Though Asmongold rode WoW Classic’s success to top the individual charts, as a category World of Warcraft didn’t quite beat out established Twitch leaders Fortnite and League of Legends, while Dota 2’s The International, which also took place in August, helped it to third place.

With WoW Classic showing no signs of diminishing just yet, however – remaining at or near the top of Twitch almost every day since its launch – it would be no great surprise to see the game claiming the top spot for September.
