PewDiePie released a new video slamming creator conventions and how our society reacts to internet celebrities, while mocking the most recent Con failure, TanaCon.
YouTuber Tana Mongeau, known for her controversial videos that occasionally include racial slurs, threw TanaCon after being repeatedly slighted by another creator convention – VidCon. Unfortunately for Tana, TanaCon was a disaster and PewDiePie was ready to meme it.
PewDiePie showed angry Twitter posts from attendees of TanaCon, which included fans chanting “refund” and complaining about the lack of food, water and security at the venue. A number of celebrity creators who were promoted as participating in TanaCon were unable to attend, due to a lack of planning from Tana and scheduling issues with the concurrent VidCon.
TanaCon was plagued with long lines and ended up being very different from what was promised. At one point, PewDiePie mockingly reveals the only positive to come from TanaCon – a TanaCondom that was included in every guest bag.
Despite the relentless shots at TanaCon and its creator Tana Mongeau, PewDiePie understands why she threw the event in the first place. He makes a hard pivot around the 9 minute mark of the video, sympathizing with why Tana felt the need to throw her own version of VidCon.

“[VidCon] is not what YouTube is, it’s what they want it to be… they pick who they want to have as featured creators and probably don’t want controversial creators like Tana Mongeau to attend their event. Which leads to her coming to the event, and then fans swarm around her, which leads to safety issues and she gets kicked out. And apparently, this happened year after year.”
PewDiePie explains how the lack of convention planning experience doomed TanaCon, but he hopes Tana takes what she learned and tries again next year. He then switched his sights to VidCon and how celebrities are treated at creator conventions, by showing a clip of Casey Neistat waving to screaming fans.
“This is the reason why I don’t want to go to VidCon, people screaming at you is just obnoxious. There is no reason, no reason, why anyone should treat me more than anyone else. I don’t want it, I find it annoying… I hate this whole concept of fame and worship. Why? Why is that a thing?”
“This whole idea of worship is being promoted through these VidCon events where people just run around like f***in Neanderthals… It’s so stupid.”
