The live-action adaption of The Witcher made its debut on Netflix in 2019, and became a smash hit for the streaming giant. Here’s everything we know about the wildly anticipated Season 2.
The Witcher became a staple in modern pop culture after video game developer CD Projekt Red made it into an RPG franchise starting in 2008. The trilogy of games have become best sellers on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox consoles.
However, the fantasy series connected with viewers around the world after Netflix premiered its live-action adaption of the Polish novels by author Andrzej Sapkowski. Here is what you need to know about the follow-up season to the breakout show.
Witcher Season 2 announced
Netflix showed a lot of confidence in the adaption from the very beginning, as the company announced that there would be a Season 2 in November 2019 – an entire month before the series even made its debut. Their instinct wasn’t off, as the show became an instant hit.
Showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich made the announcement on Twitter, exclaiming, “I’m so thrilled to announce: Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri will be back for more adventures… in Season Two. I could not be more proud of what the amazing cast and crew of The Witcher have accomplished.”

The Witcher Season 2 trailer

The official Season 2 trailer was released by Netflix on October 29, and we finally got to see how Geralt, Ciri, and Yennifer will look when it comes out.
There’s plenty of action shots, but no sign of exactly what the season will be about. We do get to see plenty of monsters though, including what looks like a leshen towards the very end.
Release date
Along with the season 2 trailer on October 29, we also got an official release date for the Witcher Season 2: December 17, 2021.

Global health crisis delays
According to a report from Deadline, four members of the crew have tested positive for COVID-19. Because of this, it’s likely Season 2 of the Witcher will be pushed back even further. This is the second crisis-related delay for the show, with a halt of March-August being due to a cast member’s positive testing of the virus.
What will Season 2 be about?
Season 1 of the Netflix series took various stories from the Polish novels written by Andrzej Sapkowski. While it’s not a strict adaptation, most of the first eight episodes was covered in the book The Last Wish.

So far we know that Season 2 will introduce Vesemir played by actor Kim Bodnia, and will feature the location Kaer Morhen. Based on what has been adapted so far, it’s safe to assume that it will borrow from the novels Blood of Elves and Time of Contempt.
Onset photos
The Witcher intel resource, Redanian Intelligence, shared on their Twitter on November 23, 2020 some on-set photos of Cavill and the cast. Talking to crew who were all masked, Cavill was cloaked in a robe.
He was also spotted eating some lunch while on a break. It’s exciting to see filming taking off again after the delays.

Opening Scene teases
Netflix Queue, the Twitter account which pays homage to the creative minds and people that work on the shows behind the scenes, has shared a first look at the introduction to Season 2.

A short look at the opening scene of the new season, we’re given a sneak peek into the continued dark and macabre world that Netflix has created through the use of the source material. Under the moonlight, in a snowy town square, a voice-over of Geralt accompanies the scene which sees family members going missing and a whole lot of blood.
Geralt of Rivia’s disability
Many fans of the CDPR game may not be familiar with the famed Witcher’s shattered thigh and elbow, which leaves him in unimaginable pain and incredibly dazed. But, it’s something fans of the book have been raising with the showrunners to include.

Lauren S. Hissrich has vowed to fans to not gloss over this issue anymore, citing that “I’ve not thought of it further than: Geralt has some pain, onto the next thing.” She then corrected herself, detailing that she was wrong, and is excited to get into this further in the future to add an extra layer to the complicated character of The Witcher.
