The Whispers were a mysterious new addition to Final Fantasy 7 Remake who make a return in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, but what exactly are they and how do they impact the game’s narrative?
Anyone who’s played the Final Fantasy 7 Remake will be familiar with the ghostly figures that appear in different scenes known as the Whispers. This was rather shocking when it first happened, as there were no Whispers in the original Final Fantasy 7, causing fans to speculate on what they were and what they meant for the Remake series.
The Whispers are also known as the arbiters of fate, which gave players a significant clue as to their purpose but not their origins. By the end of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake, we had a clear idea as to what the Whispers were, but lots of questions still remain.
As the Whispers are set to return in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, here’s what you need to know about these ghostly figures.
Who are the Whispers in FF7?
As the Final Fantasy 7 Remake series, including FF7 Rebirth, is set in an alternate reality to the original FF7, the Whispers exist to try and ensure the timeline doesn’t deviate from its pre-determined course. In other words, the Whispers are trying to make sure the Remake universe plays out the same way as the original Final Fantasy 7 – meaning characters like Aerith would once again need to die.

The issue the Whispers have is that the Remake timeline has already deviated from the original FF7. Characters like Biggs and Zack Fair are alive in this parallel universe, and that means anything could change. The Whispers are particularly drawn to Aerith in the FF7 Remake, suggesting they are aware of her fate and are attempting to steer her towards it.
Of course, characters like Aerith and Sephiroth seem to have already figured out that the events they’re involved in have played out before. This knowledge alone could alter the timeline, with them actively hindering the Whispers – or Sephiroth could try and make history repeat itself. However, this will also involve ensuring his own defeat.
Whether the Whispers are ultimately successful in preserving the timeline or changing it back to its correct course remains to be seen. Who’s to say that the original Final Fantasy 7 was even the correct timeline to begin with? However, the Whispers’ mission should worry the characters who have already cheated death – or those who still could.
