Epic Games have finally addressed the anger among fans of their popular battle royale game Fortnite, after the developers introduced cross-platform skill-based matchmaking to the game.
Fortnite is one of the most popular games in the world, with fans jumping into the Battle Bus on a variety of different platforms, including PC, consoles, and mobile devices.
Players were furious when Epic Games enabled cross-platform matchmaking, which placed them into matches based on a skill rank, instead of the peripherals they were using, which meant that mobile players were finding themselves in lobbies with those on keyboard and mouse, putting them at a distinct disadvantage.
Following the complaints from their player base, Epic Games finally responded to the criticisms aimed at them in a blog post released on October 3, explaining why they decided to implement the feature, and providing an update on any possible changes that may take place.
“We’ve seen a lot of discussion about potentially unfair competitive advantages from pooling players together across platforms and input devices,” the post reads. “The new matchmaking system, however, accounts for various skill levels across different platforms and control inputs, and groups players of similar skill levels together.

“Our goal with the new matchmaking system is to create fairer matches for all of our players, which includes special considerations for each platform. This means that where similar skill exists, players may be paired against opponents from all platforms – whether they’re using mouse and keyboard, a controller, or touch input.”
As for changes to the system, Epic Games say they are “closely monitoring match analytics and feedback,” and will “make adjustments to ensure everyone is playing a fair match,” but refrained from mentioning any possibility of a rollback.
The developers also released new information about the literal bots which are coming to Fortnite in Season 11, giving a look at what they will and won’t be able to do in-game, and more information about their purpose.
