Starting with v11.20 of Fortnite, DirectX 12 support will be available on PC, a move Epic Games says is necessary for graphical upgrades coming down the road.
For a game that is ever-evolving like Fortnite, it’s no surprise to see the hardware requirements change throughout its life.
With DirectX 12 support slowly becoming the norm for PC titles, players will now be able to add Fortnite to that list as the next update will finally allow support for it.
Epic Games explained this decision in a blog post on November 18, saying that to add the features that have in store for the future, the upgrade to DX12 is necessary.
“In the future, we plan on adding features to Fortnite that are made possible by DX12,”
DirectX12 is currently recommended for players who have decent hardware, as it’ll take advantage of newer graphical features for every game that might not be available on lower-end devices.

Many games will have an option to switch between DX11 and DX12, and it sounds like Fortnite will have a similar option. Players will have to opt-in, and Epic says anyone who does so will provide valuable information and help iron out some bugs.
Epic says players with high-end rigs will be able to experience better performance at the cost of potentially running into bugs, so there are pros and cons of opting in.
The exciting part of the whole post is the fact that Fortnite has more features on the way that will need stronger PCs to implement. Players were already forced to upgrade their GPUs once, and they may have to once again.
Near the end of every season, Epic likes to have a significant event that sums up the season. As we’ve seen lately, the events are becoming more and more intense, and it sounds like the developers have something even bigger up their sleeves.
We’ll have to wait and see what the team has in store for the end of the first season of Chapter 2.
