Fortnite Godzilla vs Kong 33.20 update: Leaks & everything we know

The next highly anticipated Fortnite update is version 33.20 for Chapter 6 Season 1 which is set to deliver a huge Godzilla vs Kong collaboration.

Originally teased in the Hunters season trailer, Godzilla and King Kong are set to have an epic in-game showdown in the Battle Royale. But that’s not all – plenty more additions, including a virtual anime pop star, are also in store.

Update 33.20 downtime details

Fortnite’s 33.20 update was released on January 14, 2025. The downtime began at 12:30 AM PT / 3:30 AM ET / 8:30 AM GMT and ended at 3:30 AM PT / 6:30 AM ET / 11:30 AM GMT.

Matchmaking was disabled shortly before the maintenance period began, but players were still able to download the update as normal as they waited for the servers to come back online. The maintenance period lasted much longer than expected and ended up lasting three hours.

The 33.20 content update has officially begun the countdown to the highly anticipated Monsterverse collaboration. While details about the Godzilla x Kong event remain under wraps, the developers have started releasing teasers following the patch in preparation for its launch on Friday, January 17.

Fortnite’s official Twitter/X account shared a cryptic post, saying, “Something HUGE has been walking through here…”

Accompanying the message was an image showcasing the first official reveal of the Godzilla x Kong branding. The image also depicts the Shining Span bridge split down the middle, with a massive Godzilla footprint embedded in the ground, teasing the upcoming live event.

Godzilla Trailer

On January 13, 2025, Fortnite officially shared a snippet of Godzilla in action via a cinematic trailer on X (formerly Twitter) that shows the monster stomping around the map.

Kong makes a subtle appearance in the trailer, not only in the copyright text but also as a Car Decal on the side of a newly revealed orange Car Body skin. The car drives past shortly after Godzilla’s dramatic arrival stomping into Seaport City.

The general consensus is that the update will involve an in-game live event expected to be an NPC boss battle between Godzilla and King Kong to mimic the Godzilla vs Kong movie released in 2021.

Godzilla wrecks Shining Span

After the Godzilla update dropped, the Shining Span bridge was split in half. There’s signs of a wreckage and giant footprints.

There are other map changes, like snow melting and the farm south of Shattered Span becoming a full fledged factory, Kappa Kappa Factory.

King Kong NPC boss

Following the event, both iconic titans are anticipated to appear as NPC bosses on the Chapter 6 Season 1 island to be hunted down and eliminated to earn exclusive loot rewards.

Trusted Fortnite leaker Loolo_WRLD also found a file codenamed “banana” that includes the names “Growl, Roar (long/short), Step, and Thump” believed to be the moves for a King Kong NPC boss.

Godzilla Mythic abilities

Ahead of launch, the Mythic that Godzilla uses and drops upon being killed was leaked.

According to leaker Hypex, this mythic turns you into a towering Godzilla-like creature and unleash powerful abilities like Beam, Stomp, and Roar. For a twist, there’s also a ‘Throw Banana’ ability, hinting at a potential Kong-inspired addition.

Godzilla Evolved and Mecha Godzilla skins

Despite much of the content in the update being added to Fortnite on January 14, two Godzilla skins will be unlocked for Battle Pass owners on January 17 with two pages of cosmetic rewards.

These include the Godzilla Evolved skin and an expected Mecha Godzilla skin style, which are further backed by the Mecha Godzilla Back Bling shown below, as revealed by trusted leaker Blortzen.

Leaker Jorge Most (via HYPEX) has also found proof of Mecha Godzilla’s January 17 arrival. Reportedly, the mechanized monster will appear in a bundle alongside Kong for 2,800 V-Bucks. Kong’s skin will cost 1,500 V-Bucks on its own, with the Mecha Godzilla cosmetic priced at 1,800 V-Bucks.

The bundle will also feature two Pickaxes at 800 V-Bucks apiece when purchased separately, two Wraps for 500 V-Bucks each, and an Emote worth 400 V-Bucks.

Hatsune Miku

The Music Pass has been taken over by Hatsune Miku for Season 7 of Fortnite Festival, offering players her exclusive Neko Hatsune Miku skin and alternate Brite Bomber-inspired skin style, as well as various other themed cosmetics as part of the Premium Pass for the music mode.

A normal Hatsune Miku skin displaying her signature look has also been made available to purchase from the in-game Item Shop with V-Bucks.

Fans may have already noticed subtle Easter eggs hinting at her arrival scattered across the Chapter 6 Season 1 map. These include an inflatable shark dog and a leek hidden around the Seaport City POI that can all be found in our guide.

Returning weapons

Two massive Titans are stomping onto the Battle Royale island, and players will need some serious firepower to take them down. Leaks point at the return of the Rail Gun and Recon Scanner, futuristic weapons from Chapter 2 Season 7.

The Rail Gun charges up to blast through walls, while the Recon Scanner reveals enemy locations with a recon bolt.

Godzilla Quests

Besides the weekly quests, Fortnite launched a set of quests that’s exclusive to Godzilla’s arrival. These quests are available from January 14 to January 31.

Story Quests

The Splinters of Possibility quests and Week 6 challenges launched shortly after the patch update on January 14 at 9 AM ET / 6 AM PT / 2 PM GMT, as indicated in the Fortnite Quests tab within the in-game menu.

These mark part 3 of this season’s Story Quests and involve forging a blade and helping Night Rose at the end.
