Graphics card makers NVIDIA have provided statistics which appear to prove that having higher FPS in games like Fortnite and PUBG can have a dramatic impact on your kill to death ratio, when paired with a high refresh rate monitor.
Does having higher frames per second (FPS) and refresh rate really make a major improvement on your performance in shooter games?
Well, of course that’s what NVIDIA, the biggest graphics card manufacturers, would want you to believe, but now, they have provided the evidence to support this claim.
NVIDIA’s top of the range card, the RTX 2080 Ti, will set you back well over $1,000, but its performance truly is unrivalled by just about any other card on the market.
But is all that money worth in terms of gameplay performance? According to NVIDIA’s own research, players using an RTX 20 series card (2070, 2080 and 2080 Ti), and enjoying the FPS boost it grants, have, on average, a 53% higher K/D ratio in Fortnite and PUBG, than players using the low end GTX 600 series card.
Simply owning a better graphics card won’t instantly make you better at a game though, and NVIDIA recognizes this.
So, as a further test, NVIDIA have added the amount of time spent practicing into the equation, with the number of hours per week paired with the graphics card being used, and the results still show big advantages with the superior hardware.

Finally, the effect of pairing a superior graphics card with a higher refresh rate monitor was also tested. Having a card capable of 144 FPS isn’t worth much if you are running it on a 60Hz monitor.
Running a 240Hz monitor might be overkill for many, especially given the much higher price they demand, but pairing a powerful graphics card with a 144Hz monitor is probably the best price-to-performance deal.
For aspiring competitive battle royale players, it will be in your interest to at least maintain 144 FPS, which, depending on quality settings, should be possible with most mid to high range GPU’s.
Although there are improvements with the RTX 20 series cards, the GTX 1070 or 1080 should also be capable of reaching 144 FPS, although the quality settings may need turned down more.
Investing in a 144Hz refresh rate monitor is also a must, otherwise that money spent on a superior GPU will essentially be going to waste.
