Turner ‘Tfue‘ Tenney is one of the most popular Fortnite pro players and streamers in the world, and after encountering players using controllers during December 19’s Twitch Rivals Community Charity Showdown, the 21-year-old explained how powerful the gamepads truly are in the popular battle royale title.
The war between controller players and those who use keyboard and mouse has been a hot topic between professionals and streamers in Fortnite for a long time. Many claim that the aim assist that those who use a gamepad receive is far too powerful, and gives them a significant advantage in gunfights by dragging their crosshairs towards opponent’s heads.
After encountering enemies during the Twitch Rivals Community Chairty Showdown using thumbsticks instead of a mouse, Tfue explained why playing against those who use the controller can be so difficult, giving some insight into the way they can be so dangerous to come up against.
Playing with fans of his who won the opportunity to compete in the Showdown with him, Tfue and his squad came under fire from a squad featuring a controller player, who killed one of his teammates with just four bullets to send him back to the lobby screen. Discussing it after, the viewers asked if enemies who used gamepads were really that hard to play against, with the pro player explaining how two different settings can give them unique advantages.
“I’ve been victim to it many times, but is it really that bad?” once teammate asked, as Tfue laughed in response. “Well, it depends.”
“There’s like two different loadouts, or controller players. There’s Linear players and Legacy players. At long range, Legacy is like, f**king crazy broken, and Linear has crazy hipfire tracking.”

Legacy and Linear are two different controller settings, with Legacy acting as the gamepad assists and sensitivities included in the game at launch for those who are accustomed to them and don’t want to change. Linear offers more control over these settings with higher building and editing sensitivities, with changes to how aim assist works which many believed to be a buff when it launched back in October.
With these two options offering advantages in either long-range or closequarters combat respectively, there’s a setup that controller players can use regardless of their playstyle which will give them a helping hand when searching for Victory Royales, making them dangerous no matter the distance.
While many believe aim assist does give a helping hand to controller players, theoretically they are still at a major disadvantage in Fortnite as keyboard and mouse not only offers more precise aiming and movement, but allows for quicker building and editing with the sweep of the mouse that thumbsticks just cannot replicate.
