On the surface, Fortnite looks like a pretty simple game but there’s a surprising amount of depth that goes into it.
Unlike other battle royales, Fortnite features a building mechanic that helps it stand apart from the crowd, but perfecting that as a player takes hours upon hours of practice.
It’s a daunting task but simply playing each day will pay dividends. Luckily, there are some other tips you can pick up on as you’re learning the ropes.
10. Don’t forget to fish
Fishing is a new mechanic that was introduced in Chapter 2 and it completely changes the game. Many long-time players might overlook fishing and loot the normal way, but fishing is actually a very good way to loot on its own.
Fishing might actually end up being the best early-game strategy in some situations as you’re able to catch weapons, healing items, and even building materials just by casting your line for a minute or two.
One thing you will have to be wary of is fishing out in the open, because you will definitely be a big target if someone catches you with just a rod.
9. Find your drop spot
If you watch the best players play Fortnite, you’ll notice that a lot of them have a dedicated drop spot that they land at every game.
Learning one or two spots on the map inside-out will greatly speed up your early-game looting as you learn where everything is. Knowing where the chests spawn in a location will allow you to get to them fast and give you an edge over players who don’t know where to go.
Of course, you can’t always get a good drop at one specific location, which is why it’s important to learn a couple of them. Repetition is key so you might even want to figure out your looting path for a few games, even if it doesn’t result in a win.
8. Watch pro players
This sort of ties in with the last tip about seeing pros land in certain spots. Watching someone play Fortnite at a high level will help you learn a lot about the game.
Of course, seeing them come out on top in a lengthy build fight won’t exactly teach you how to do that yourself, but you will learn how to handle those situations once you’re skilled enough mechanically.
Despite that, knowing what to do in a given situation is half the battle and eventually, everything will start clicking and you’ll be thanking yourself that you found yourself watching Tfue that one time.
7. Keep a balanced loadout
Having the right weapons in your inventory is very important if you want to earn your way to a Victory Royale.

Your early-game looting is important, but you have to make sure it isn’t the only time you loot. Having a loadout of guns and healing items will be key if you want to come away with a win.
To go even more in-depth, you’ll want to make sure you have an assortment of weapons. A good recommendation would be to have an assault rifle, shotgun, sniper, explosive, and healing item. It’s a well-rounded inventory that will allow you to handle practically every situation.
6. Don’t forget to farm materials
Materials are arguably the most important part of Fortnite as you’ll need to be building a lot to remain competitive.
You might be able to make it through much of the early-game and even the mid-game without building, but once you reach the final stages of a game, it’ll be difficult to win without having materials.
Having extensive knowledge of how to build will give you an advantage, but just having the option to build ramps and walls will come in handy. However, you won’t be able to do this without having any supplies.

If you’re in a normal lobby, you’ll have to whack trees, walls, cars, and everything else for materials, but in Arena, you can do this by just earning eliminations. Whatever the method is, you’ll want to make sure you have materials.
5. Wear headphones while playing
If you’re already doing this, then you’re a step ahead of many other players. Sound is important in any game but it’s especially important in a game like Fortnite.
With everybody out to get you, it’s important to know where they are coming from. If you can hear footsteps approaching, you’ll be able to prepare yourself and potentially get the jump on them.
Another situation where a pair of headphones will come in handy is when you’re inside a building trying to figure out if the footsteps are coming from above or below you. Knowing this information is key if you want to have a fighting chance in Fortnite Chapter 2.
4. Using a controller? Experiment with the settings
Controller players have a lot of different settings they can mess around with but for most players, it will come down to a debate between using Combat Pro and Builder Pro.
As you learn the game, you should mess around with all of them but picking either one will greatly improve your play in Fortnite. Building is very important in Fortnite Chapter 2 so Builder Pro will help you create structures faster than any other setting, while Combat Pro will favor those who like to take fights first and build second.
Give a couple of games a go with each setting to see which one works for you.
3. Take advantage of the boats
Chapter 2’s new map introduced a lot of waterways and the best way to navigate those is with a boat. Obviously, you’ll be able to find the boats around water, but using them is a different beast altogether.
The boats are armed with rocket launchers which can be deadly, but they won’t always be the best idea, especially if you’re playing by yourself. That said, boats are still a great rotational tool so stay near one if you can.

One thing you might not know about the boats is that they can actually travel on land through the use of their boost, but you’ll be a huge target that way.
Also, boats can be quite noisy so you might end up being targeted by multiple people looking for an easy elimination.
2. Don’t take every fight
Just because you see an enemy across the map doesn’t mean you have to engage with them. Sometimes it’s better if you just hang back and focus on other things like looting or figuring out where you’re going to rotate to next.
You want to make sure you have a good stock of building materials and weapons before you get into battles or you’ll just be finding yourself back in the lobby in no time.
Pay attention to your surroundings – if you see someone fighting another person, you might be able to come in and clean them both up while they are weak. Players complain about being ‘third-partied’ all the time, but it’s a good strategy for some easy eliminations.
1. Practice, practice, practice
It’s a saying as old as time but practising is definitely the best way for you to improve in Fortnite Chapter 2. Knowing what to do is good but actually doing it is a different matter.
Taking in all of these tips won’t mean anything if you don’t put in the hours. Fortnite Chapter 2 represents a good jumping in point for anyone who has never tried the game before so you won’t be alone.
With the addition of skill-based matchmaking near the end of Season 10, new players will all be matched up with each other so don’t worry if you’re a noob.
Bots have also arrived to help newer players get a grasp of how Fortnite works while also allowing them to have a bit of fun.
There you have it – follow those 10 tips for noob players and it’ll help make Fortnite Chapter 2 a much more enjoyable experience.
We hope to see you on the Battle Bus soon!
