Ubisoft’s decision not to build around Assassin’s Creed Black Flag when creating their new pirate-themed video game Skull & Bones has fans raising questions.
Skull & Bones was released on February 13 after over a decade of development. Despite the initial excitement for the game’s release, multiple delays in the game’s production impacted its hype.
The fan reaction to the game once it was released was lukewarm, especially because of its $70 price tag. We at Dexerto thought the game fell short of its promises and felt unpolished, resulting in our 2/5 rating.
Fans were hoping for a release similar to the Assassins Creed title from years prior. However, that was not delivered, leaving fans wondering what had gone wrong between the release of the two games.

“I honestly think they released Skull and Bones because they sunk so much time and money into it, and decided to cut their losses,” said one user. “They know they’ll more than make up for it with the Black Flag remake so they’re not too worried.”
Other commenters thought it was weird Ubisoft didn’t just copy over the mechanics from Assassin’s Creed Black Flag, a game with a similar concept that fans had a much more positive reception to.
“Literally all people wanted was Assassins Creed 4 but just the pirate parts,” said another user. “Poor leadership and no clear vision gave us this mess. At one point the game was pivoting toward either a Rocket League clone or an Overwatch clone.”
Unlike previous Ubisoft titles, Skull and Bones has not delivered on what was once a promising premise. The game could receive future updates but Ubisoft has not made any announcement surrounding the title.
