E3 2019 shared some exciting details surrounding some of the most anticipated upcoming games, but which of those are the most popular? The pre-order numbers are in.
GameStop, the largest video game retailer in the world, have shared their top 10 most pre-ordered games that were showcased at E3. The list can be seen below:
- Call of Duty Modern Warfare
- Pokemon Sword/Shield
- Final Fantasy VII Remake
- Cyberpunk 2077
- Borderlands 3
- Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening
- Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order
- Gears 5
- Super Mario Maker 2
- Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled
Surprise surprise, Call of Duty is top
Call of Duty’s 2019 game, Modern Warfare, didn’t have the exposure it has had at past E3 events. Nevertheless, the brand speaks for itself and when there is a list and Call of Duty is involved, the iconic shooter usually finds itself at the very top.
The game has already created attention for itself by creating a campaign that supposedly makes it previous most controversial campaign “No Russian” look like a “Pixar film”. Reports since have indicated that the Modern Warfare campaign is already changing because parts are so “disturbing”.
Pokemon in at #2
Somewhat predictably, the new Pokemon game comes is the second most pre-ordered game. The introduction of the eighth generation of Pokemon has been hyped for several years now, and in November 2019 fans will finally get the chance to experience it themselves.
However, while pre-orders are clearly looking healthy right now, many fans were actually left rather disappointed by what they saw at E3. The biggest news to come from the event was that the National Pokedex won’t be included – and this could see pre-orders drop.
Cyberpunk behind Final Fantasy VII
The new Cyberpunk 2077 game has been years in the making and the hype for the game would have only been amplified by the appearance of Keanu Reeves at E3.

Despite the celebrity factor, the Final Fantasy VII Remake is currently receiving more pre-orders which is testament to the popularity of the original.
Super Mario Maker surprisingly low down
The second Super Mario Maker game has been heavily promoted by Nintendo and the game’s reception at E3 was remarkably positive.
Even so, it could be argued that the game still lags behind the likes of Gears of War 5, Borderlands 3 and fellow Nintendo Switch game, Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening.
More games to come
Of course this list only shows games that appeared at the E3 trade fair. There are plenty of other huge releases to look forward to that have yet to be announced.
Among those are GTA 6, which will no doubt even knock Call of Duty of its perch when it’s available to pre-order. Elsewhere, there’s the hugely anticipated Elder Scrolls 6 game to look forward to and a Microsoft exclusive Fable 4 game.
