Obsidian Entertainment’s next first-person RPG looks set to rival Skyrim and here’s what we know about it so far.
Perhaps best known for Fallout: New Vegas and The Outer Worlds, Obsidian is once again returning to first-person RPGs with Avowed, a brand-new fantasy adventure where players must explore The Living Lands.
This is set to be an immersive RPG that lets you wield swords, magic, and firearms, interact with companions, and dig into a robust dialogue system.
Release date & early access
Avowed will be released on February 18, 2025. Pre-ordering the Premium Edition of the RPG will offer 5 days of early access starting from February 13.
Platforms
Avowed will be available on Xbox Series X|S and PC through Steam, the Xbox app, and Battle.net. Microsoft owns Obsidian Entertainment so it’s an Xbox and PC exclusive, at least at launch.
While nothing’s confirmed, there’s a chance we’ll see a PlayStation release down the line. After all, Microsoft published Indiana Jones and the Great Circle but it’s coming to PlayStation in spring. Also, Obsidian’s other game this year, The Outer Worlds 2, releases on PS5 day one.
Will Avowed be on Xbox Game Pass?
Yes, Avowed is a Day One Game Pass release. That means anyone with an active subscription to the service can jump into the fantasy RPG at no extra cost on February 18.
You can also upgrade to the Premium Edition for $22.49/£17.99 (discounted for Game Pass subscribers), letting you access the game early on February 13.

Avowed gameplay details
Avowed is set in Eora, the same universe as the Pillars of Eternity franchise. In it, you’ll assume the role of an envoy of the Aedyr Empire who must investigate the mysterious Dreamscourge plague.
Here, you’ll wield magic and weapons such as swords and guns to defeat your foes. Each weapon has a unique feel to it, furthering the game’s immersion. A loadout system is a big part of Avowed so you can tailor your weapon loadouts to fit your preferred playstyle. It has character creation, but you’ll be limited to humans and elves.
Instead of the large open worlds you’d come to expect from RPGs, Avowed’s Eora is made up of smaller biomes similar to The Outer Worlds.
Companions will also be a key feature, with a variety of unique characters from a former mercenary, to an eccentric wizard joining you on your journey. There’s no romance though, the devs decided to focus on platonic relationships.
Much like Obsidian’s previous works, expect a robust dialogue system in a world full of consequences.
