Sony’s next generation console was revealed last month by lead system architect Mark Cerny. The yet to be officially named PS5 included some potentially impressive specs.
In an interview with Wired, Cerny revealed that the Playstation 5 will have an AMD Ryzen CPU, Radeon Navi GPU, an SSD which isn’t even available in PCs yet and the scarcely seen new ray tracing technology.
While this sounds impressive, and will most likely be just that, actual numbers and stats for each component remained a mystery after the reveal.
Another PS5 leak
A subsequent leak from April 25, which has largely remained under the radar since but claims to be sharing details from a secret Sony meeting, revealed more details about the Playstation 5 specs.
First reported on by Notebookcheck, the leak actually details specific clock rates. While this will go over most people’s heads, the numbers allow us to see just how powerful the PS5 could be.
Before listing the details it is important to note this is a leak with little to no evidence of being true. The details sound plausible, and according to experts add up, but the information should be taken with the proverbial grain of salt until confirmed.
The specifics are as follows:
- 8 core Zen 2, clocked at 3.2Ghz
- Custom Navi GPU, 56CU, 1.8Ghz, 12.9TF
- 24GB RAM (no further details given)
- Custom embeded Solid State solution paired with HDD
- PS4 backwards compatibility is native. PS3 will remain part of PS now
What do the numbers mean?
The leaker finishes by saying: “It may not as powerful as some think, Sony say they want a balanced machine that’s powerful with limited potential for bottlenecks.”

This statement shocked some Redditors who responded that they believe the above specs are actually very powerful for what the next generation of consoles were expected to be. While not conclusive many believe the reported CPU will be about four times as powerful as the current PS4.
The GPU has also surprised people, boasting 12.9 teraflops of power. A previous leak had suggested it will have 14 TF but this has been shot down because not even PC GPUs have reached that number yet.
Additionally, the apparent PS5 memory has also produced a shock. The expectation had been a total of 16GB of RAM but this leak has pegged it at 24GB. Some are speculating that is in fact a developer version and the retail version will be 16GB.
If so, this would mark a two times increase in comparison to the PS4. Some comments were hopeful it will be 24GB of RAM as this would increase the longevity of the console.
How powerful is it?
Powerful. So much so that people who understand the numbers are surprised at how these specs can fit in a supposedly $500 console.
Despite the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X being capable of close to 4K gaming at 60 FPS, many had thought even the next generation of consoles were only just hit the 4K 60 FPS mark.
However, these specs renew optimism regarding its capabilities and as a result we can now expect the next gen of consoles to hit it with ease.
