Sony CFO Hiroki Totoki has finally touched on the price of the PlayStation 5, explaining that it is still yet to be determined, just before the official PS5 website was launched on February 4
Though both the PS5 and Xbox Series X boast some impressive technical specs, such as fast SSDs, ray-tracing and more, these components are sure to come at a premium.
This has left some fans cautious in their excitement for the next console generation, concerned that they might have to shell out more than ever before to get Sony and Microsoft’s latest offerings.
Speaking on Sony’s third-quarter earnings call (via SpielTimes), Chief Financial Officer Kotoki said: “because we are competing in the space, […] it’s very difficult to discuss anything about the price at this point of time, and depending upon the price level, we may have to determine the promotion that we are going to deploy and how much costs we are prepared to pay.”
So, it sounds like with the new Xbox set to release at a similar time, around Holiday 2020, the two competitors will be keen to ensure they don’t over or underprice their machines.
Totoki said that it is “very difficult to say anything concrete at this point [in] time,” and that they’re looking to maintain “balance” so that the PS5 is profitable throughout its product life.
PS5 Website launched
Shortly after the call, Redditors noticed that a website had been setup for the PS5. This could indicate that an announcement is imminent.

When is the PS5 being revealed?
This revelation means that it’s unlikely a price will announced for the console at a reveal event expected in February or March. There’s no confirmation yet though, only speculation based on the release period of Holiday 2020.
Xbox is moving along faster, having already revealed their console, so perhaps Sony is expecting them to announce the price first too, allowing them to set their own accordingly.
So, how much will the PS5 cost?
Based on the information we have so far about the console, it’s possible to give a rough estimate of how much Sony might end up charging. We did the maths here, and calculate that the base model will most likely come in at around $500.
It’s possible that Sony offer two models, with a more pricey ‘Pro’ version aimed at more serious gamers, perhaps at around $650, or even $700. This could help offset any tight margins in the lower end model.
But, even Sony themselves don’t know for sure how much the PS5 will cost at the moment, so we’ll simply have to wait to find out.
