Team Vitality did the unthinkable when they defeated the defending LoL World Champions Gen.G in their first group stage match match at the 2018 Worlds.
Coming into any international League of Legends event, European and North American teams are usually seen as the underdogs when facing teams from South Korea’s LCK league.
That fact was amplified when Vitality, fielding a trio of rookies in Amadeu ‘Attila’ Carvalho, Jakub ‘Jactroll’ Skurzyński, and Daniele ‘Jiizuke’ di Mauro, were tasked with playing against Gen.G, an incredibly formidable opponent.
Right out the gate, though, things weren’t looking too good for Vitality, as Gen.G got off to one of the best starts you could imagine with a 6-to-1 kill advantage after 13 minutes.
Despite the seemingly insurmountable deficit, Vitality never gave up and kept pace with Gen.G the rest of the way until finally winning a couple key team-fights before executing an exciting backdoor play inside the enemy base to secure the improbable win.

While the win was impressive and hype enough on its own considering it was this team’s first game of Worlds, the moment was even better on the Italian broadcast of the event.
As Gen.G’s Nexus was crumbling, the Italian commentators can be heard going absolutely crazy as they witness Jiizuke become the first Italian player in Worlds history to win a match.
There’s no telling how Vitality or Gen.G will fare throughout the rest of the competition, but there’s no denying the incredible nature of Vitality’s moment on Wednesday.
