League of Legends Season 12 is set to add a new rune and rework some pre-existing favorites as Riot shakes up the game yet again: We’ve got a rundown of all the preseason changes here, including all the details on the Precision and Inspiration tree reworks.
League of Legends Season 12 is set to be like every other new season, with a host of changes being shipped to Summoner’s Rift.
Two new Dragons are shaking up the Rift, and a handful of new items are filling the void left by the Season 11 rework. The runes system is also getting some love, with a few new additions and changes keeping things fresh.
Here’s what you need to know about League’s Season 12 rune changes, including all the new runes, reworks to the Precision and Inspiration trees, and more.
Inspiration rune tree rework: Glacial Augment, First Strike, more
The Inspiration rune tree is once again getting a rework in League of Legends Season 12. Notoriously the most difficult of the five to balance, Riot is changing things up by adding a damage-centric keystone to the tree for the first time.
Named First Strike, it boosts your damage when you initiate combat onto an enemy first for a few seconds. The bonus damage you do is then converted to gold, meaning you can generate a ton of cash — even if you miss out on the kill.
Glacial Augment is also set to get a rework to become more potent. When you immobilize an enemy, you’ll shoot out three glacial rays to nearby enemy champions, slowing enemies and also reducing their damage.
The damage reduction addition is a nice touch, and might make the rune more viable on CC-heavy picks like Neeko.
Lethal Tempo getting overhauled in LoL Season 12
Lethal Tempo has fallen behind some of the other Precision runes in League of Legends. The attack speed bonus is only good enough on a select few AD carries, with most opting for Conqueror or Press The Attack instead.
However, in Season 12, the rune might become a lot more appealing. It will now work passively, giving you bonus attack speed for six seconds after hitting an enemy champion with an attack, stacking up to six times — like Guinsoo’s Rageblade.

At maximum stacks, your attack speed cap will be increased, and your attack range extended — making it incredibly strong on picks like Kog’Maw and Azir who rely on capping their attack speed to do massive amount of damage.
Other smaller rune changes are expected in the lead-up to League of Legends Season 12. We will update you once Riot pushes them into testing ahead of the November 17 pre-season launch.

Glacial Augment
Rune updated
- Immobilizing an enemy champion will cause 3 glacial rays to emanate from them towards you and other nearby champions, creating frozen zones for a few seconds that slow enemies for 40% and reduce their damage by 15% against your allies (not including yourself).
First Strike
New rune
- Damaging an enemy champion with an attack or ability before they do so grants 5 gold and First Strike for 3 seconds, causing your attacks or abilities to deal 12% extra damage against champions, and granting 100% (70% for ranged units) of that damage dealt as gold.
Precision tree
Lethal Tempo
