Riot Games explained how players will be able to earn cards in Legends of Runeterra, their upcoming competitive card game.
Legends of Runeterra was unveiled during Riot Games’ 10 year anniversary livestream, and it quickly became available to the public for a limited time.
There, players were given a chance to experiment with different decks – but they weren’t given much information on how they will be able to earn and unlock new cards once the game officially released.
In a November 6 blog post, Riot gave a deep dive into how players will earn new cards, in an effort to be more transparent in how exactly players will unlock new things.
There will be a set of daily challenges each day that, if completed, will allow players to plow through the Vault, which will offer plenty of rewards. These rewards include chests that will contain cards and shards, the latter of which can be used to upgrade your current cards.
To unlock every reward, you’ll need to reach Level 20 in a region with a total of 52,500 XP. The first level takes 250 XP, and each level after that takes 250 XP more than the last, but the value of the rewards will also be increasing.

Here’s a look at every unlockable:
- 1 Rare Wildcard
- 1 Epic Wildcard
- 1 Champion Wildcard
- 2 Random Epics
- 1 Bronze Chest
- 1 Silver Chest
- 2 Golden Chests
- 2 Platinum Chests
- 1 Diamond Chest
- 2 Capsules
- 2 Wild Capsules
- 2 Epic Capsules
- 2 Champion Capsules
Riot stressed that players will never earn a fourth card, as three is the max you can have in a deck. This means that users won’t have to worry about stocking up tons of duplicate cards, which they’ll never be able to play with.
Reaching level 10 in the Vault will reward players with a Champion card, with 11, 12, and Max all providing the same thing.
If you want to give Legends of Runeterra and their Vault system a try for yourself, the next phase test is set for mid-November, so be sure to get your hands on a beta key to enjoy the action and maybe unlock some cool cards.
