In addition to the 13 professions, some villagers can be unemployed, meaning they have no job site block, or they can be Nitwits, meaning that they both do not currently have a job site block and cannot claim a job.

The green robes designate nitwits they will be wearing when you see them and are the only classification of villagers that players will not be able to trade with. While unemployed villagers also cannot make trades, once they have been given a job site block, players will be able to trade with them as normal.

Minecraft villagers: How to change villager jobs

You may find a village that does not contain the type of villager you wish to trade with, but there is a process that can change villagers’ jobs.

If you need to change the job of one of the Villagers follow the steps we have outlined below:

  1. Build or get the job block that corresponds to the job you want the villager to hold.
  2. Destroy the job site block that the villager is currently using.
  3. Place the block within proximity of the Villager.
  4. Wait for the Villager to interact with the new job site block.
  5. Once they do so, they should change into their new jobs clothing, indicating the job change.

This is a pretty universal method, and can work with all Villagers except Nitwits, as they cannot hold any jobs within Minecraft!
