Online games lean toward crossplay more and more, and Mortal Kombat 1 very much features online play. The title is available on PlayStation, Xbox, PC, and Nintendo Switch, but does it utilize either crossplay or cross-platform progression?
The bar seems to get raised with every subsequent MK entry. Mortal Kombat 11 is now well and truly in the rear-view mirror and its millions of copies sold have paved the way for Mortal Kombat 1 to burst onto the fighting game scene in 2024.
Make no mistake, NetherRealm’s franchise needs no introduction having been a leading force in the fighting sphere for 30-plus years. Decades may have passed, but the Mortal Kombat 1 reboot and the OG MK1 title still share the same ideologies and principles of what makes a great beat ’em up.
One way that gaming has evolved is online multiplayer and, in particular, crossplay. In modern gaming, players are generally curious to see if a new multiplayer title will incorporate crossplay. Many see it as a pre-requisite and almost a given – but it’s not the case.
So let’s take you through everything we know about the new game and crossplay and cross-progression.
Does Mortal Kombat 1 have crossplay?
As of writing, NetherRealm’s Mortal Kombat 1 does not feature the option to ability to use crossplay features.
After some guesswork, the nail in the coffin was hammered home by NetherRealm themselves in a Tweet on September 14, 2023 – before the game’s Early Access launch.

“Launch is just around the corner and we can’t wait for everyone to sink their teeth into #MK1. Regarding Kross-Play, it will not be available at launch, but know we are hard at work at implementing the feature into the game and it will be koming post launch.”
So while it’s unfortunate that early adopters won’t be able to battle players across various formats, the feature is 100% coming sometime after the game’s launch. Once this happens we’ll be sure to update this guide with all the crucial details.
Do we know if Mortal Kombat 1 has cross-progression?
We cannot declaratively say that Mortal Kombat 1 will or will not feature cross-progression, but it does appear as if NetherRealm has passed on this option for now.
If we compare it with Mortal Kombat 11 once more, we know that the previous iteration of the series had some form of cross-progression.
“Players cannot transfer Mortal Kombat 11 progress, unlocks, or purchases between platforms. However, since the release of Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, all earned inventory and rewards carry over to consoles within the same ecosystem,” it told players.
