In an effort to combat “bad sportsmanship,” NBA 2K24 is handing out temporary bans to anyone who quits a game.
NBA 2K has long dealt with players leaving games before the clock runs out. Some tend to walk away out of sheer frustration, others do so because they know the odds of winning aren’t in their favor.
Whatever the case, many NBA 2K fans have requested that developers add penalties for such behavior. Developer Visual Concepts responded by issuing punishments in an NBA 2K23 update in late 2022. Interestingly, those who quit games in The Rec on next-gen hardware lost their colors.
A contingent of fans said this did nothing to solve the long-standing issue. Meanwhile, some were just happy to see the studio taking action. It would appear the developers took all of this and more into consideration when designing penalties for NBA 2K24.
NBA 2K24 is hitting players with bans for quitting games
Popular YouTuber Troydan recently sat on the receiving end of an NBA 2K24 ban “because of multiple quits.” The player shared a screenshot of the ban notice on Twitter, writing “Bro I got banned on NBA 2k24 and I didn’t even do anything yet.”
According to the in-game message, Troydan was targeted for engaging in behavior that’s considered “bad sportsmanship.”

The full notice reads, “Quitting games is considered bad sportsmanship. Because of multiple quits, your access to multiplayer game mods has been restricted for 30 minutes.”
Of course, a 30-minute expulsion won’t keep offenders out of commission for very long. But it seems a big step up from the penalties featured in previous NBA 2K experiences.
Replies to the Troydan post suggest NBA 2K24 players will appreciate the bans. “Don’t be quitting,” one person wrote. Another user chimed in with, “That’s what those quitters deserve.”
Here’s to hoping that even half-hour timeouts will deter some players from making the decision to quit mid-game.
