Lamar Jackson, the reigning NFL MVP, spoke earlier this week about Super Bowl LVIII and why he will not be watching the season’s finale.
Jackson burst onto the national scene during his time at Louisville. The dual-threat signal-caller terrorized opposing collegiate defenses en route to a Heisman Trophy in 2016.
Although Jackson had a fruitful career with the Cardinals, he dropped to the end of the first round after declaring for the 2018 NFL Draft.
The Baltimore Ravens took Jackson 32nd overall and slowly brought the young quarterback along as a rookie before unleashing him on the rest of the NFL for the 2019 campaign.
That year, Jackson led the Ravens to the top seed in the AFC by becoming the consensus choice as the league’s Most Valuable Player. It marked only the second time a player won MVP unanimously in NFL history, but even his MVP performance wasn’t enough to get him to the Super Bowl. His disappointment has kept him from even wanting to watch it.
Lamar Jackson wants a Super Bowl more than MVP award
He followed a few more successful years with a lucrative contract extension from Baltimore this past offseason. Jackson proved the investment was wise by winning his second MVP award in 2023.

While accepting his award at NFL Honors, Jackson appreciated the praise but couldn’t stop talking about the pain of missing out on Super Bowl LVIII. He told a reporter, “To be here to accept the award is an honor. But I’d rather have been in the Super Bowl than be here accepting the award.”
“If I win for a third time, hopefully, we will be in the Super Bowl and playing,” Jackson replied with a slight chuckle. He was then asked which team would win Super Bowl LVIII, but the two-time NFL MVP didn’t have an answer because he won’t be watching the game. Jackson later explained why.
“Too raw. I’m good. I don’t want to watch the game,” the superstar quarterback said to NFL Network. After losing to the Kansas City Chiefs less than two weeks ago, Jackson says the wound is still fresh.
If his career to this point is any indication, the Ravens signal-caller will use his disappointment as added fuel for the 2024 campaign. According to Jackson, a Super Bowl is the only thing he’s chasing after.
