Blizzard has announced that a new Overwatch Animated Short is about to be released.
The new animated short will premiere on Wednesday August 22, although no other details regarding the content of the video have been revealed.
The short will be streamed as part of Blizzard’s Overwatch presentation at Blizzcon, and uploaded to the official Overwatch YouTube channel at 5:00am CT on August 22.
The Overwatch Animated Shorts are high-quality animations that tell the story of Overwatch, each typically focusing on a particular hero. With Overwatch having no “campaign mode” through which players can experience the narrative of the game, the animated shorts have been one of the main ways that Blizzard has developed the lore of Overwatch.

Unfortunately for fans of the series, the animated shorts have been released infrequently, likely a consequence of the effort that must undoubtedly go into producing videos that have been nominated for and won multiple awards. There have been eight in total, though the most recent – “Honor and Glory”, which focused on Reinhardt’s back-story – was released in November 2017.
So far, Winston, Widowmaker, the Shimada brothers (Genji and Hanzo), Soldier: 76, Bastion, Sombra, Mei, and Reinhardt have each been the primary focus of a short, though Reaper, Tracer and technically even Brigitte (prior to becoming a hero) have also appeared as secondary characters.
