The Atlanta Reign’s Player Development Coach Cas “Casores” van Andel revealed on Oversight that ATL Academy is beating Overwatch League teams in scrims.
Speaking with MonteCristo and Thorin, Casores said that one thing the Reign has going for them is they’ve been using their extremely strong academy team to scrim against.
“Our academy team, just for reference, beats over half the Overwatch League teams right now in scrims,” he said.
Popular commentator and guest Connor “Avast” Prince chimed in crying “scrim bucks!”
Scrim bucks is a term used to devalue a team’s performance in scrims because the teams are not on stage and there are not any consequences for losing. The implication is, just like Monopoly money, there is no value associated with it.
With that said, it’s still impressive for a team in Tier 2 to be beating half the teams in the Overwatch League. Unfortunately, Casores didn’t reveal what teams they were beating.

Despite originally mocking the scrim results, Avast still praised the team adding, “your academy team is great and the investment you guys have in academy is incredible.”
ATL Academy had a perfect season of Contenders with a 7-0 record. In fact, they never dropped a single map and hold a 28-0 map score. Very similar to the San Francisco Shock during stage 2 of this year’s Overwatch League season.
Their stacked roster includes the incredibly young DPS prodigy Sugarfree and Team UK’s allstar Lucio FunnyAstro.
The Contenders favorites next match is August 13 in the North American East semi-finals. A win there would guarantee them a place in the Gauntlet where they’d play against the other top Contenders teams in the world.
The Gauntlet starts October 9 at the Giga Arena in Seoul, South Korea.
