Overwatch game director Jeff Kaplan has teased even more new content is coming a lot sooner than fans might expect.
It’s been an exciting few months for Overwatch. Blizzard introduced the Overwatch Workshop, a feature few were asking for but that has been an overwhelming success, and followed it up with a replays system, and now the introduction of role queue.
It seems they’re not done with bringing out new content for the game, however, as while talking on Brandon ‘Seagull’ Larned’s stream during the Sigma reveal, Jeff Kaplan hinted at yet another announcement coming in “late summer.”
“We have something exciting a month or two from now,” Kaplan said, “there’s something very cool happening around that time period.”
What might Blizzard be announcing?
While it’s entirely possible that Blizzard might have something totally unexpected up their sleeves again, there are a few more predictable options they might be preparing.

It’s possible, for instance, that they might be working on another event to introduce to the calendar after two full years of the exact same schedule. With Summer Games starting and ending earlier this year, there might be space for something new between it and the Halloween event due for mid-October.
Alternatively, it could be another hero on its way earlier than expected. Blizzard are known to be working on multiple future heroes right now, with Echo, Sojourn, and Mauga all confirmed as eventually becoming playable characters, and other candidates such as the mystery omnic from Storm Rising also potentially being worked on.
It’s not impossible, then, that they could look to increase their yearly hero output by slotting another in between Sigma and the anticipated BlizzCon hero, especially if they hope to further expand the tank and healer line-ups for role queue, with the damage class having several more options than either.
On the other hand, the announcement might not be for something in-game at all. Since Overwatch’s release, many fans have been crying out for more story content, so it might be that Blizzard have another animated short lined up, or could perhaps reveal more extensive plans to dive into the game’s lore.
Finally, there have also been rumblings of a PvE and story-based “Overwatch 2” title in the works, although something as major as that is likely to be reserved for BlizzCon, if it’s being revealed this year at all.
