Overwatch streamer Brandon ‘Seagull’ Lanred told fans during stream why resetting players’ MMR or SR would ultimately be a bad idea.
In plenty of competitive online games, players’ Multiplayer Matchmaking ranking/ratio (MMR) determines which competitive tier they play at. In Overwatch, this is represented as a players Skill Rating (SR), which can range from 1 to over 4500.
One popular idea in the Overwatch community is that the game needs a hard MMR or SR reset – the idea being that, since the game has been out for three years, players feel they’re now “better” than their SR indicates and would be placed higher if the system were to be reset.
Seagull, on the other hand, is convinced it wouldn’t work. Overwatch had an SR reset before during the game’s beta all the way back in 2016, but according to Seagull it was a mess
After a viewer asked whether or not he thought there should be a “hard MMR reset” after each season, Seagull once again told viewers what he thinks of the idea.
“Uhh MMR reset?” the streamer repeated. “MMR reset is like a big jebait, everyone always begs for it but they have no idea what they’re talking about.”

“Typically, the people who ask for MMR resets are the ones stuck in low rank who are like, convinced that they’re not,” Seagull told viewers. “’Oh, I’m stuck in ELO hell, no one could get out of this.’”
What would probably happen, according to some of Seagull’s previous comments on the topic, would be a few weeks of chaos as bronze and other low rank players got matched with grandmasters in placement matches, with everyone ultimately going back to the rank they were before.

Obviously Seagull doesn’t think a hard MMR/SR reset would be a good idea, but the thought doesn’t seem to be going away any time soon.
