Dark-type Pals are one of the more naturally mysterious elements in Palworld, though they offer a lot if used in the right circumstances. They are often a little more difficult to track down, but it’s well worth it for the right companion.
Palworld offers over 100 different Pals to collect and getting to grips with all of their potential strengths and weaknesses is a difficult prospect. The issue is further complicated by the dichotomy between prioritizing base maintenance abilities and combat
That said, there are some Pals who perform very well in all departments or those who excel in a particular area. Those are the ones listed here, and each of them makes worthy additions to any fledgling collection.
Read on for the full list of the best Dark-type Pals in Palworld.
Felbat
- Element: Dark-type
- Partner Skill: Life Steal – While fighting together, grants the player and Felbat the life steal effect which absorbs some of the received damage and restores HP.
- Work Suitability: Medicine Production Lv. 3
With a design that looks like a bat that’s halfway transformed into a vampire, there’s a lot to like about Felbat. As its appearance may suggest, it has an extremely useful Partner Skill that allows the Player and their companion Felbat to benefit from a passive life steal effect.
Though it isn’t particularly impressive at the base in a generalist sense, it does have an impressively high Medicine Production capacity. This is an unusual trait and does make Felbat worth having around for certain situations.
Menasting
- Element: Dark-type
- Partner Skill: Steel Scorpion – When fighting together, increases the player’s defense and Electric Pals drop more items when defeated.
- Work Suitability: Lumbering Lv. 2, Mining Lv. 3
This terrifying armored scorpion excels in combat, outputting insane damage and buffing the player at the same time. The Steel Scorpion Partner Skill adds impressive defense to the player, offering far better survivability when Menasting is the active companion.
Around camp, Menasting is no slouch either. The Level 3 Mining skill is one of the highest in the game and leaving on that job alone should see the player base able to produce a significant excess of goods in this area. Well worth picking up in the mid-game.
Astegon
- Element: Dragon/Dark-type
- Partner Skill: Black Ankylosaur – Flying mount. When mounted, Astegond deals increased damage to ore.
- Work Suitability: Handiwork Lv. 1, Mining Lv. 4
Astegon is the terrifying Dark/Dragon-type that serves as the only Pal with that combination of element types in the entire game. This makes it particularly useful for taking on Necromus and Paladius, who are hard countered by one of those types each.
Additionally, Astegon is a bit of a beast when it comes to its Mining ability. Not only does it allow the player to mine ore faster when mounted, but it also has a Lv. 4 Mining Work Suitability, making it the most capable worker in the entire game in this area.
Frostallion Noct
- Element: Dark-type
- Partner Skill: Black Steed – Flying mount. It changes the player’s attack type to Dark and enhances Dark attacks while mounted.
- Work Suitability: Gathering Lv. 4
Don’t be fooled by its uniquely pretty appearance, Frostallion Noct packs a significant punch when it comes to combat. Much like its Ice-type sibling, this midnight black steed can serve as a flying mount, and it provides a combat buff that converts player damage to Dark, before enhancing its output.

Though it isn’t the most well-rounded camp companion, it does excel at Gathering, with a Lv. 4 work suitability in that area. Once your camp hits Lv. 10, Frostallion Noct is a great specialist to have around.
Helzephyr
- Element: Dark-type
- Partner Skill: Wings of Death – Flying mount. It applies Dark damage to the player’s attacks while mounted.
- Work Suitability: Transporting Lv. 3
Helzephyr is a terrifying bird Pal that, like many others on this list, excels in combat scenarios. It rains down devastating attacks that are extremely difficult for potential enemies to avoid. It also augments existing player damage with extra Dark damage, allowing them to turn into two-element wrecking balls.
As with some of the other Pals on this list, Helzephyr specializes in one area when left to work at camp. With Lv. 3 Transporting, it shouldn’t be too long before things are moving very quickly around your home base.
Maraith
- Element: Dark-type
- Partner Skill: Messenger of Death – Mount. It applies Dark damage to the player’s attacks while mounted.
- Work Suitability: Gathering Lv. 2, Mining Lv. 1
The resident “spooky ghost” of the Palpagos Islands, Maraith is a solid Pal to go after in the mid-game. It serves as an able steed when traversing the game’s micro-continents and it also adds additional Dark-type damage to the existing damage on player attacks.
While working in camp, it is a solid addition without really excelling in any major way. Gathering and Mining are both essential skills to have around and Maraith is a solid stop gap measure until more able companions can be caught.
Necromus
- Element: Dark-type
- Partner Skill: Dark Knight of the Abyss – Mount. Can double jump while mounted.
- Work Suitability: Lumbering Lv. 2, Mining Lv. 2
The only Dark-type Legendary Pal in the entire game, Necromus is as destructive as his status would suggest. Starting with the basics, this Pal has a useful double-jump partner skill and around camp it can pitch in with Lumbering and Mining duties.
Forget all of that though because the only thing you’re going to want Necromus for is to absolutely dominate on the battlefield. Against all but its direct counters, it’s more than capable of cleaning house in basically any setting. Get it. Get it now.
Shadowbeak
- Element: Dark-type
- Partner Skill: Modified DNA – Flying mount. It enhances Dark attacks while mounted.
- Work Suitability: Gathering Lv. 1
Of all the Dark-type Pals in Palworld, Shadowbeak is arguably the best. Starting with the negatives, it offers very little in a camp setting, with only a Lv. 1 Gathering skill working in its favor.
From there, it’s all brilliant. It serves as an impressive flying mount that enhances Dark attacks when the player is riding Shadowbeak. Outside of that, it may well have the highest damage output in the entire game, thanks to its Divine Disaster ability.
