Aside from your Pals, the Shield is your best friend when it comes to battle. Check out how to use a shield in Palworld for that sweet extra protection.
In the early game, fighting Pals in Palworld was relatively easy and required little effort. However, things will start to get more difficult once you level up and begin to look for rarer materials and Pals — even more so once you start facing dungeon bosses.
What used to feel like skirmishes will gradually turn into longer and harder battles, and if you haven’t seen the clips yet, it’s possible to get one-shotted by a Pal. That is why having a Shield is important for extra protection.
For those of you who would love to play safe, here’s everything you need to know about how to use a Shield in Palworld.
How does a shield work in Palworld?
Before anything else, you should know that Shields in Palworld don’t exactly work like regular shields. Specifically, they are not an item you can physically hold with your hand to protect you from a hostile Pal.
Instead, Shields are treated like a passive that fills the blue bar above your health, essentially giving you extra health. As long as your Shield bar is full, you’ll generally be able to tank more damage than usual.

The best thing about using a Shield is that it will regenerate over time once depleted. There’s no need to repair it when it depletes; just try to dodge as long as you can during combat while you wait for the Shield bar to be full again.
How to use a shield in Palworld
Upon reaching level 4, you can unlock your first Shield — the Common Shield. To craft this, you’ll need to gather 10 Paldium Fragment, 20 Wood, 20 Stone, and 10 Fiber and head to your Primitive Workbench.
Once your Shield is ready from the workbench, you will automatically equip it when you press F on your keyboard. Another method to use the Shield is by dragging it in your inventory to your character’s Shield slot. This also works for replacing a Shield you no longer want to use.
Much like chests, higher-tier Shields will become available as you continue to progress through the game. As always, they’ll require different materials depending on the level. It might take some grinding, but it’s worth it in the long run, especially if you’re playing on hard difficulty.
