Mega Evolutions are some of the most powerful creatures in Pokemon Go, but they won’t come cheap. So, to make sure you’re focusing your Mega Energy on the best fighters available, here are our top picks.
The Mega Evolution mechanism was first introduced in Pokemon X & Y, giving existing species a far more powerful form. Though they’ve been dropped from mainline games – except the upcoming Legends Z-A – Mega Evolutions are almost crucial in Pokemon Go.
In Niantic’s game, Mega Evolutions are a temporary state, and you’ll need to win Mega Raids to earn enough Mega Energy to trigger this special form. As this is a time-consuming (and sometimes costly) process, you’ll want to make sure you’re focusing on only the best Mega-Evolved Pokemon available.
The list won’t include Groudon and Kyogre’s Primal Reversions or Dialga and Palkia’s Origin Forms.
10. Mega Diancie
- Fast Move: Rock Throw
- Charged Move: Power Gem and Moonblast
While getting a Diancie is a hard thing to do due to its Mythical status, those who manage to get one will have one of the best Rock-type attackers for Raids and a very well-rounded Pokemon for trainer battles.
Despite being a glass cannon, Mega Diancie’s incredibly high Attack stat makes it a great addition to any team.
For Raids, focus on its Rock moves like Rock Throw and Avalanche. However, for PvP, take Rock Throw for heavy damage and pair it with Power Gem to bait shields and the Fairy-type nuke Moonblast for more coverage.
POKEMON | TYPE | RESISTANCES | WEAKNESSES | ENERGY COST |
---|---|---|---|---|
Mega Diancie | Rock/Fairy | – Bug– Dark– Fire– Flying– Normal– Dragon | – Steel– Grass– Ground– Water | Initial: 300Base: 60High: 30Max: 15 |
9. Mega Alakazam
- Fast Move: Psycho Cut
- Charged Move: Fire Punch and Shadow Ball
The well-remembered Alakazam is one of the best Psychic-type attackers in Pokemon Go for all types of combat, so it’s only natural that its even more powerful Mega version has a spot on this list.
In Raids, the Confusion and Psychic combination can obliterate any Poison and Fighting-type enemies, while a more varied moveset can take care of the Battle League encounters.
Psycho Cut is a Fast Move that generates energy fast, which allows players to access Fire Punch and bait shields. Then, they can hit them hard with the Ghost-type nuke Shadow Ball while also expanding the coverage.
POKEMON | TYPE | RESISTANCES | WEAKNESSES | ENERGY COST |
---|---|---|---|---|
Mega Alakazam | Psychic | – Fighting– Psychic | – Bug– Dark– Ghost | Initial: 200Base: 40High: 20Max: 10 |
8. Mega Swampert
- Fast Move: Mud Shot
- Charged Move: Hydro Cannon and Earthquake
Mega Swampert has one of the best type combinations in the game, as its secondary type – Ground – makes it resistant to what would be a Water-type key weakness: Electricity.
Besides that, this mighty beast has a very high Attack stat and an incredibly powerful move pool that can be mixed up for different coverage strategies like full Water or full Ground for Raids and combined for PvP.
Its ultimate best moveset includes Mud Shot as the Fast Move due to its fast energy gain, which allows you to unlock Hydro Cannon early on. Then, the trainer can bait the opposing shields to then blast the outstanding nuke Earthquake to end the battle.
POKEMON | TYPE | RESISTANCES | WEAKNESSES | ENERGY COST |
---|---|---|---|---|
Mega Swampert | Water/Ground | – Electric– Fire– Poison– Rock– Steel | – Grass | Initial: 200Base: 40High: 20Max: 10 |
7. Mega Garchomp
- Fast Move: Dragon Tail
- Charged Move: Outrage and Earth Power
Even though the best Ground and best Dragon-type positions are reserved for Primal Groudon and Mega Rayquaza, respectively, Mega Garchomp is still a strong contestant for both.
While in the Master League: Mega Edition, it is best to exploit its full Dragon side with Dragon Tail and Outrage (a quick Fast Move and a nuke of a Charged Move). It can also dab as a strong Ground attacker with Mud Shot and Earth Power if necessary.
POKEMON | TYPE | RESISTANCES | WEAKNESSES | ENERGY COST |
---|---|---|---|---|
Mega Garchomp | Dragon/Ground | – Fire– Poison– Rock– Electric | – Ice– Dragon– Fairy | Initial: 300Base: 60High: 30Max: 15 |
6. Mega Gardevoir
- Fast Move: Charm
- Charged Move: Triple Axel and Shadow Ball
Mega Gardevoir is one of the most used Pokemon in the game, as it is a top counter for most PvE battles such as Giovanni and Cliff thanks to its incredibly versatile move pool, but mainly the Charm and Dazzling Gleam combination.

While its signature attack is Dazzling Gleam, its optimal moveset combines three different types to give Mega Gardevoir wider coverage.
Charm can deal heavy Fairy-type damage, while the Ice move, Triple Axel, helps boost its Attack stat by 25%, making the nuke Shadow Ball an unstoppable Ghost-type finisher.
POKEMON | TYPE | RESISTANCES | WEAKNESSES | ENERGY COST |
---|---|---|---|---|
Mega Gardevoir | Psychic/Fairy | – Psychic– Dragon– Fighting | – Ghost– Poison– Steel | Initial: 200Base: 40High: 20Max: 10 |
5. Mega Blaziken
- Fast Move: Fire Spin
- Charged Move: Blast Burn and Blaze Kick
Mega Blaziken might be considered a glass cannon, but it boasts one of the highest Attack stats in the whole game, making it a top-tier attacker.
While it excels as either a Fire or a Fighting Pokemon, with its full Fire-type moveset, it is almost unstopable. So, pick Fire Spin as its Fast Move and pair it with Blast Burn as the Charged Move for unparalleled damage per second.
POKEMON | TYPE | RESISTANCES | WEAKNESSES | ENERGY COST |
---|---|---|---|---|
Mega Blaziken | Fire/Fighting | – Dark– Fire– Grass– Ice– Steel– Bug | – Flying– Ground– Psychic– Water | Initial: 200Base: 40High: 20Max: 10 |
4. Mega Gengar
- Fast Move: Shadow Claw
- Charged Move: Shadow Punch and Shadow Ball
Mega Gengar has long been considered a top Mega Evolution for Raid Battles, and while it’s not quite number one in PvP Battles (that award, of course, goes to Mega Rayquaza), it’s still one of the best Megas to use.
Shadow Claw is Mega Gengar’s best Fast Move, thanks to its high energy generation and solid damage. It’s a Community Day-exclusive move, but the low-cost Shadow Punch is brilliant for baiting shields, while Shadow Ball rounds things out with huge STAB damage.
POKEMON | TYPE | RESISTANCES | WEAKNESSES | ENERGY COST |
---|---|---|---|---|
Mega Gengar | Ghost/Poison | – Fairy– Grass– Bug– Normal– Poison– Fighting | – Dark– Ghost– Ground– Psychic | Initial: 200Base: 40High: 20Max: 10 |
3. Mega Tyranitar
- Fast Move: Smack Down
- Charged Move: Brutal Swing and Stone Edge
The mighty Mega Tyranitar is one of the best Dark-type Pokemon in the game, as well as a top Rock creature, mostly due to its incredible DPS and TDO. It can also deal strong damage (and fast) while targeting a wide array of opponents.
Despite being a wonderful Dark attacker in PvE, it’s best to use it as mainly a Rock type in the Master League: Mega Edition.
The Fast Move Smack Down deals heavy damage while loading the Charged Move Brutal Swing. This Charged Move will help you bait the opponent’s shields, so once you take them out, you can blast your enemy with the nuke Stone Edge.
POKEMON | TYPE | RESISTANCES | WEAKNESSES | ENERGY COST |
---|---|---|---|---|
Mega Tyranitar | Rock/Dark | – Dark– Fire– Flying– Ghost– Normal– Poison– Psychic | – Fighting– Bug– Fairy– Grass– Ground– Steel– Water | Initial: 300Base: 60High: 30Max: 15 |
2. Mega Lucario
- Fast Move: Force Pam
- Charged Move: Aura Sphere and Thunder Punch
Lucario has always been considered a top tier Pokemon, and of course its evolution is even better, mainly due to its many resistances and incredibly high Attack stat.
This dual Fighting/Steel-type creature has an outstanding damage output and a versatile move pool that allows players to use it in plenty of different scenarios.
When played as a full Fighting attacker, Mega Lucario is almost unstoppable with its Fast Move Force Palm (only obtained through events or Elite Fast TMs) and the nuke Aura Sphere. The secondary Charged Move can be used to expand its coverage with either Thunder Punch or Shadow Ball.
POKEMON | TYPE | RESISTANCES | WEAKNESSES | ENERGY COST |
---|---|---|---|---|
Mega Lucario | Fighting/Steel | – Dark– Dragon– Grass– Ice– Normal– Steel– Bug– Poison– Rock | – Fighting– Fire– Ground | Initial: 200Base: 40High: 20Max: 10 |
1. Mega Rayquaza
- Fast Move: Dragon Tail
- Charged Move: Breaking Swipe and Dragon Ascent
As far as Dragons go, you won’t get much better than Mega Rayquaza in Pokemon Go. Dragon-type moves are rarely resisted, making it a great all-around attacker with Dragon Tail and Breaking Swipe.
While for now it’s best to exploit its Dragon-type potential, it can also be utilized as a great Flying-type attacker, where powerful moves like Air Slash give it a big advantage once combined with its Legacy move Dragon Ascent.
POKEMON | TYPE | RESISTANCES | WEAKNESSES | ENERGY COST |
---|---|---|---|---|
Mega Rayquaza | Dragon/Flying | – Bug– Fighting– Fire– Water– Grass– Ground | – Ice– Dragon– Fairy– Rock | Initial: 400Base: 80High: 40Max: 20 |
