Pokemon Legends Z-A is taking players back to the Kalos region, but will the game feature the beloved Mega Evolution mechanic, which was introduced in Pokemon X & Y?
The Pokemon franchise has introduced several new battle mechanics over the years, starting with Mega Evolutions in Gen 6. Z-Moves followed this in Gen 7, Dynamax/Gigantamax in Gen 8, and most recently, Terastalization in Gen 9.
The problem is that Game Freak has been cycling these special mechanics out with each new entry, save for both Mega Evolutions and Z-Moves appearing in Gen 7. This has caused a backlash from fans of these mechanics, who want to see them appear in every game.
Pokemon Legends Z-A is set in the Kalos region from Gen 6, the era when Mega Evolutions were first introduced. Does this mean that Mega Evolutions are set to return when the game launches in 2025?
Mega Evolution will appear in Pokemon Legends Z-A
The fans of Mega Evolution around the world can celebrate, as the first trailer for Pokemon Legends Z-A ended with the appearance of the Mega Evolution symbol. This confirms that the mechanic will be part of the game in some capacity.

As the previous Pokemon Legends game featured battling, it’s almost certain the player can Mega Evolve in battle in Pokemon Legends Z-A. This also hints at encounters being more important in Pokemon Legends Z-A, as Mega Evolution has no function outside of them.
Fans are excited at the prospect of new Mega Evolutions appearing in Pokemon Legends Z-A, especially for the Pokemon who were unfairly left out last time, like the Kalos starters and the Legendary Pokemon in the region. These Mega Evolutions will likely also appear in Pokemon Go in the future.
As Pokemon Legends Z-A isn’t set to launch until 2025, fans will have to wait a while before we know more. Hopefully, we’ll learn more about Mega Evolution’s origins and see a whole new crop of Pokemon receiving the power-up so they can unleash it in battle.
