The Pokemon community had their minds blown when it was discovered Sword & Shield’s Nintendo Switch game case has a hidden feature. The eye-popping trick will have you seeing the box art like never before.
Sword & Shield dropped in November 2019, kicking off the beloved RPG’s eighth generation. The latest release saw players exploring the Galar region which was largely influenced by the United Kingdom.
However new features and Pokemon to catch aren’t the only discoveries trainers are making. Fans of the Nintendo franchise were in awe after learning that the title’s physical case hides a hidden secret.
Sword & Shield game case trick discovered
Over on the Sword & Shield Reddit forum, user ‘RancidBean‘ made the incredible discovery. The Pokemon fan found that if you use the Google Lens app on on your phone, looking at the game’s physical case transforms it.
Recording the trick, the user uploaded it for the community to see. Incredibly, the app quite literally brings the box art to life by projecting a video over it which shows the legendary Zamazenta jumping into action.
The case also cycles through various clips from the game, such as the protagonist leaving his house at the start of the adventure. It also shows off the new starters Grookey, Scorbunny, and Sobble.
The subreddit was blown away by the Google app trick, and at the time of writing the post has over 3.2k upvotes. User ‘seaVvendz’ exclaimed, “Wow that’s really cool. I didn’t have any regrets getting the digital version until now.”

Although another user pointed out that the app actually works on the digital version as well if you point at the Switch game tile.
Despite the incredible feature, it seems that Google lens can be a little spotty. Reddit user Makasu0127 claimed he tried it out with the 3DS Ultra Moon, only to get the same trailer from Shield.
For trainers that want to try it out themselves, they can get the app on Android here. Apple users, don’t fret – if you download the Google App, the lens feature is available.
Since its late 2019 release, Sword & Shield has continued to crush it in sales. On opening weekend alone, the Gen VIII title broke records by moving an astonishing six million units.
Nintendo announced on January 9 that the Pokemon title would be getting a DLC expansion pass. The Isle of Armor releases in June 2020, with Crown Tundra making its debut in the Fall.
