The addition of Gen 5 to Pokemon Go could be just around the corner – which Pokemon will be added first, though?
Trainers are excited about the prospect of the next generation being added to the record breaking mobile game following a cryptic message alluding to Gen 5’s arrival.
There has yet to be any direct confirmation of Gen 5 coming but given time frames between past generations, we can expect it to be soon. Previous generations had a gap of around 10 months and Gen 4 to 5 is already 11 months apart, so this only adds to the likelihood of a new content drop.
Gen 5 schedule
There were 156 Pokemon added in Gen 5 (bringing the total to 649) so there’s a lot for Niantic to choose from when deciding which will be the first to be released. Other than the acrostic message of UNOVA, there hasn’t been any other information revealed so speculating which Pokemon will be first is just that – speculation.

However, we can look at past generations to try and gain a rough idea as to which will come first. Firstly, we know the new Pokemon introduced will be completely original as Gen 5 was the first generation not to introduce evolutions (or pre-evolutions) from past Pokemon.
Generation 5 starter Pokemon
Trainers, as with all generations, will be most familiar with the starter Pokemon – Snivy, Tepig, Oshawott. These are the Pokemon that will be most likely among the first to be released.

Starter Pokemon from Gen 2 through Gen 4 were also among those initially released and there’s no indication that Niantic won’t repeat this pattern.
Speaking of patterns, Niantic have a set one for community day headliners which, if continued, would see the grass-type Snivy feature in March 2020.
Any legends?
Despite there being 9 legendary and 4 mythical Pokemon in the Unova region, it doesn’t seem likely Niantic will release any of these immediately. It makes sense for them to be left for their own separate events.
However, with there being so many in this particular generation there is an increased chance one could be added to at the start, albeit unlikely. So, you’ll have to wait for the likes of Reshiram and Zekrom.
We shouldn’t have to speculate too much longer, as news surrounding the fifth generation in Pokemon Go is expected soon.
