Mega Tyranitar is returning to Pokemon Go, bringing both a tricky battle and a highly sought-after catch to the popular game. Here are Mega Tyranitar’s weaknesses and best counters to take it down easily.
It’s no secret that taking down Mega Evolutions is a challenge. Even the best players with the most powerful roster can struggle when they don’t prepare enough or adjust their party depending on the enemy’s weaknesses. After all, types are one of the most important parts of any Pokemon game.
So, to help you get hold of your very own Mega Tyranitar in Pokemon Go now that it’s coming back to Mega Raids, here’s everything you need to know about how to defeat it, including its weaknesses, best counters, and whether you’re lucky enough to get a Shiny.
Mega Tyranitar weaknesses in Pokemon Go
Since Mega Tyranitar is a dual Rock/Dark-type Pokemon, it’s weak to quite a few types, including Bug, Fairy, Grass, Ground, Steel, and Water. Additionally, it has a double weakness to Fighting types, so it’s worth using a Pokemon that specializes in these attacks when taking on this Raid.
As for strengths, Mega Tyranitar can resist Psychic, Normal, Flying, Poison, Ghost, Fire, and Dark, so avoid taking these particular types to the encounter.

How to get Mega Tyranitar in Pokemon Go
Luckily for players, Mega Tyranitar is returning as a Mega Raid boss from February 6, 2025, until February 17, 2025, when it will be replaced by Mega Garchomp.
You’ll be able to get hold of this mighty beast by defeating it in 5-Star Mega Raids. However, you cannot catch Mega Tyranitar in its Mega-Evolved form in Pokemon Go.
Instead, you’ll be given the chance to catch regular Tyranitar using a certain amount of Premiere Balls that will vary depending on how well you fought.
Then, you’ll be required to stock up on the Mega Energy you’ll receive as a reward for doing so, and use it to temporarily Mega Evolve your strongest standard Tyranitar.

How to evolve Tyranitar into Mega Tyranitar
Once you’ve caught Tyranitar, you can Mega Evolve it using 300 Mega Energy. This will be the standard ‘price’ for its first evolution.
Once the effect is over and you want to Mega Evolve it again, the Mega Energy requirement will drop to 60, then 30, and eventually 15.
Mega Energy
If you’re lacking Mega Energy, you can obtain it by defeating Mega Tyranitar in Mega Raids multiple times. Other methods include completing Special Research tasks and taking regular Tyranitar for a walk after setting it as your Buddy.
It’s worth noting that for Tyanitar to collect Mega Energy while going for a spin, it must have been previously Mega Evolved at least once.

Yes, Mega Tyranitar can be Shiny in Pokemon Go, as it was added into the game the same day regular Mega Tyranitar debuted.
Those who take on the mighty Mega Tyranitar multiple times during the Mega Raids will have increased chances to encounter this special version and they’ll be able to recognize it due to its brownish skin and purple details on its belly and chest.
Nonetheless, if you cannot find one, you can always Mega Evolve a regular Shiny Tyranitar to get what you’re after.
