Pokemon Legends Z-A has the opportunity to answer one of the series’ biggest mysteries, as the Ghost Girl of Lumiose City could finally find her “one.”
The Pokemon series is intended for kids, but it also has its fair share of scarier moments. The Gen 1 fans still fear Lavender Town and its haunting theme, while modern players were terrified by the scary portrait in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet’s DLC.
The Pokemon world is also home to ghosts, and I don’t mean Ghost-type Pokemon. The spirits of the living dead wander the land, unable to find peace, with some even interacting with the protagonists of the mainline games.
By far, the most famous ghost in the Pokemon world appeared in Pokemon X & Y. The Lumiose City Ghost Girl has haunted fans for years, especially as we never got an answer as to why she appeared.
Who is the Lumiose City Ghost Girl?
In Pokemon X & Y, a spooky cutscene will play if you visit Lumiose City and take the elevator to the second floor of the Fighting Dojo building. Your character will be frozen as a ghostly figure who uses the Hex Maniac model floats around the room. She says ” “No, you are not the one,” before disappearing.
And that’s all it took to enflame fans’ minds, as the girl is never seen again, nor do we ever learn who “the one” is. Fans have speculated about the mystery of this ghost since the launch of Pokemon X & Y, but no answer has ever been given.
Why the Ghost Girl mystery was never answered?
It’s unclear if Game Freak ever had an answer to the ghost mystery in Pokemon X & Y. There’s a good chance it was always meant to be a spooky scene with no deeper meaning, just to give the fans the willies.
However, we know that more games were planned for the Kalos region. One of the many Pokemon leaks following the Nintendo Gigaleak revealed that there were plans for two more games in the Kalos, likely direct sequels to Pokemon X & Y, as they are mentioned in the data for Pokemon Sun & Moon.
It’s unclear why these Kalos games were scrapped and why Pokemon jumped straight to Gen 7, but Game Freak was willing to leave many unanswered questions on the table, including the ghost in Lumiose City.

The Pokemon Company has announced Pokemon Legends Z-A, which not only returns to the Kalos region but will be set entirely in Lumiose City. This means we can finally get an answer to the ghost girl, depending on what form the story takes, as we don’t know when it’s set.
How a prequel Pokemon Legends Z-A can solve the mystery
If Pokemon Legends Z-A occurs before the events of Pokemon X & Y, then we could witness the events that led up to the demise of the ghost girl, with fans learning why she became a restless spirit and why she’s waiting for “the one.”
In an even bigger twist, we could potentially play as the ghost. The trailer didn’t reveal the protagonist, so maybe we play as the girl in her life, witness the creation of Lumiose City, and uncover her mysteries first-hand.
In this scenario, the ending could involve a flash-forward to events after Pokemon X & Y, where she finally meets “the one” in Lumiose City.
How a present-day Pokemon Legends Z-A can solve the mystery
The trailer for Pokemon Legends Z-A showed a modern incarnation of Lumiose City, so it could well be set in the modern day or even the future. In this scenario, the player could encounter the ghost again and learn more about her than we did in Pokemon X & Y.
There’s a chance that the protagonist could be “the one.” We know that Pokemon Legends Z-A involves turning Lumiose City into “A vision of beautiful coexistence between people and Pokemon.” Perhaps that’s the role of “the one,” as they bring humans and Pokemon together in a way that wasn’t possible before.
Game Freak has a perfect opportunity to bring closure to the Lumiose City Ghost Girl in Pokemon Legends Z-A. There are many exciting ways this could come about, with a mystery introduced over a decade ago finally being answered in a new game.
