Pokemon Scarlet & Violet trainers are convinced that Gen 9 was teased all the way back in 2023 through the Kalos region in X & Y.
Pokemon Scarlet & Violet are no doubt excited about Pokemon Legends: Z-A, which was teased through the 2024 Pokemon Presents livestream.
Since then, trainers have been diving back into the Kalos region in anticipation of what they could see through Gen 9’s next side game in the Legends series.
Now, some savvy trainers are convinced that Pokemon X & Y teased Scarlet & Violet all the way back in 2013 thanks to an interesting set of bookshelves found in Kalos.
Pokemon Scarlet & Violet think Kalos teased Gen 9
A post on the Pokemon Scarlet & Violet and LegendsZA subreddits proposed a theory that maybe Game Freak had planned out the early details of Gen 9 during X & Y’s release.
The OP asked the community, “Were these Scarlet and Violet books way back in X-Y,” and provided an in-game screenshot showing two sets of bookshelves. Lining each of the shelves were various Violet and Scarlet-color books.

Of course, this could parallel the actual Scarlet and Violet book present in Gen 9, which serves as a key plot point in each respective version.
Some players were skeptical that Game Freak was able to plan that far ahead to place a deliberate Easter Egg. “I doubt they were thinking that far ahead. Retroactively, however…,” said one fan.
This find also led some trainers to wonder if Pokemon Legends: Z-A to reference Paldea in some way. “I am wondering if there will be any reference to the Paldea region in Pokemon Legends: Z-A… Like some subtle nods or something.”
While we don’t know exactly what Generation Pokemon Legends: Z-A will be under, it could certainly be a possibility if it is still considered Gen 9. Considering Legends: Arceus’ Professor Laventon is from the early Galar region and that game is considered part of Gen 8, it seems likely.
Whether or not these Scarlet & Violet books in Gen 6 were actually a Gen 9 tease remains unclear. However, fans may see plenty more Kalos and Paldea connections when Pokemon Legends: Z-A releases in 2025.
