Gimmighoul is a rock-solid addition to any Pokemon Scarlet and Violet team but waiting to get it can be a pain.
Pokemon Scarlet and Violet added a tonne of new Pokemon to the Paldea Pokedex with some new fan favorites emerging in the new generation. Particularly for the usually thin roster of Ghost-types.
Standouts like Annihilape, Ceruledge, and Goldengho brought some much-needed depth to the suite of spooky mons. Of course, Gholdengo also has one of the most involved evolution methods of any Pokemon and the first step is getting your hands on its pre-evolved form Gimmighoul.
Getting ahold of the covetous little Ghost-type is often an exercise in patience that requires some progression through the game’s story. That is unless you follow Reddit user u/Bane_of_Ruby’s simple trick for catching Gimmighoul early in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.
How to get Gimmighoul early in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet
Usually capturing Gimmighoul in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet involves a lot of searching and access to your ridable Legendary Pokemon. Thanks to this player’s trick, you can catch one before you even set foot in the Academy.
Gimmighoul spawns in a number of locations across Paldea including on a tricky-to-reach plateau above where you meet Arvin for the first time. Ordinarily, you’d need a Korraidon or Mirraidon that can jump before you can access the area.

Luckily, there’s a much quicker way. All you need to do is wait for a wild Pokemon to spawn on the edge of the plateau. Once you have one in your sights, take aim and chuck a Pokeball at it to initiate a battle.
This will teleport your character to the top of the plateau to oversee the battle. From there, just bail on the battle and you should be able to find a low-level Gimmighoul in a chest nearby.
It’s a variation on an old trick that players have been using since the launch of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet to get to Area 4 ahead of schedule.
Luckily for players hoping to use the exploit, it hasn’t been patched out of the games in more than a year since their launch.
