A Pokemon TCG player by the name of Matthew Verive has left judges baffled after entering the North American International Championships with a deck made entirely out of jumbo cards.
Nearly every time The Pokemon Company releases a new set of cards, they offer a product that includes a jumbo version of the featured card.
These have been limited to the latest popular card from the set, which until now has prevented anybody from attempting to use them in a competitive deck. These normally consist of a variety of Pokemon, trainer, and energy cards to make a 60-card deck.
However, Matthew Verive has gained mass attention after bringing a jumbo-sized deck to NAIC that left judges baffled.
Pokemon Trainer tries to use jumbo cards
At the beginning of the North American International Championships (which, btw, is open to anyone that wants to play), Matthew shared what he was playing the event with.
After his first (and only) best of three round, he tweeted the results. “For those curious – I lost game 1, my opponent scooped game 2 (just to force a game 3 for funsies), and then I got deck checked,” his tweet reads.
Matthew also explained that after the “longest deck check ever,” the judges revealed that they weren’t sure if his cards were legal — and to talk to them after the round was over.
He then added: “Talked with the judging staff afterward, and if I didn’t drop, I might have received a DQ – for marked cards! The oversized cards aren’t cut to as high a standard as regular cards, so some cards could understandably be identified.”

Making it clear that did it all in good fun, Verive went on to post pictures of his deck with a disclaimer for any potential copycats.
“Oh, and don’t try this at home, folks – I expect the rules will be modified soon to clarify the size of usable cards,” he warned.

Judging by the reactions of onlookers, the TCG Player bringing a jumbo deck to an international championship will go down in history as simply iconic.
