After drawing a Gen 1 favorite from the Scarlet & Violet: 151 sets, this Pokemon fan was once again “hooked” after 20 years.
A new Pokemon TCG stan was born after they pulled a very special full-art Gen 1 Pokemon. The card was designed by artist Yoriyuki Ikegami, one of the new designers showcased in The Pokemon Company’s Artists of the Year 2023.
The reborn Pokemon collector said they were “instantly hooked” after the first pack they ripped in 20 years held this special card.
The card that got a Pokemon TCG collector back into Pokemon
The chance pull was an Illustration Rare Holo Ivysaur card as shared on Reddit. The art shows the creature extending its vines into a glimmering pond with a toothy smile.
Another card chaser in the thread described the 151 set as a “magical nostalgia overload,” as it brought them back to the early aughts.
The OP isn’t the first to get “hooked” again; the 151 set was notable for its beautiful depictions of the original 151 Gen 1 Pokemon.
A fellow collector advised them to “slow down and think of what you want to collect.” Then, they warned them it could “get expensive” if they wanted to catch up for lost collecting time.

“Find a theme or a specific Pokemon you want to collect and go from there,” they advised.
Burritoman53 agreed; the problem they said was “having 36-year-old money.”
With all the Pokemon TCG sets being released in recent years, the community felt concerned about the original poster. The 151 set, in particular, is a nostalgic favorite of fans, but chasing cards isn’t always the best option.
Sometimes it can be better to buy singles instead. With pull rates as low as 0.17% for the 151 Caterpie, it might just save your paycheque.
