Throughout the Pokemon series, Tyranitar is a formidable dual Rock and Dark-type that makes for a challenging foe in games like Pokemon Go, Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl, and Legends Arceus.
Like any pocket monster, though, a budding Pokemon Trainer can utilize Tyranitar’s weaknesses to turn the tide of battle with counters that are essential to defeating it.
As Tyranitar evolves from Pupitar at level 55, each one you encounter is likely to be a high level and very powerful — so here are all the need-to-know details to take into a battle against a Tyranitar, including its resistances and weaknesses.
All Tyranitar weaknesses
As a dual-type Pokemon, Tyranitar has a good few weaknesses to be aware of: Bug, Fairy, Fighting, Grass, Ground, Water, and Steel.
This means that most Pokemon teams (that usually consist of six Pokemon) will likely have at least one member well-suited to defeating it.
Fighting-type ‘mon are especially useful against Tyranitar, as they are extra weak against these. If you have any Fighting types that are dual Water or Grass-types, (like Keldeo or Quaquaval) you’ll be on to a winning formula here.
Overall, though, even if you don’t have a Fighting or Water-type if you can find a Pokemon that’s comprised of two of Tyranitar’s weaknesses, you’ll have a good chance of defeating it in battle.

Resistances for Tyranitar
Tyranitar is resistant to a variety of attacks and Pokemon types (Dark, Fire, Flying, Ghost, Normal, Poison, Psychic) so avoid using those when in battle wherever possible, as your attacks won’t do much damage and the ‘mon will have an advantage.
- You’ll definitely want to avoid Psychic-type attacks in mainline games like Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl, as Tyranitar is immune to them.
- Tyranitar’s weaknesses don’t change when it mega-evolves, but its resistances increase.

The above table lists some of the best counters you can use to defeat a Tyranitar in the Pokemon games. Most of these include Water, Fighting, and Grass-type moves, as they’re the best to target Tyranitar’s weaknesses.
Not all of our suggested counters are available in every Pokemon game, but there should be at least one you can catch and use to defeat Tyranitar.
Remember, Tyranitar is the second evolution of Larvitar, so even when you’re using a Pokemon that’s strong against its weaknesses, make sure to never underestimate this ‘mon.
