Super Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai recently revealed why Dragon Ball’s Son Goku will never appear in a Smash game.
Smash Bros is a fighting game that brings together characters from multiple game universes and allows them to compete in all-out brawls. The game has seen many updates and over the years, with new DLC’s and game versions bringing more and more fighters.
The latest version, Super Smash Bros Ultimate, is the most diverse Smash game yet, bringing together characters from old school favorites like Donkey Kong and Star Fox and pitting them against some unique fighters like the dog and duck from Duck Hunt and a Wii Fit Trainer.
Fans of the game have always wanted their favorite characters to be added to the game and one character that has always been talked about is Goku from Dragon Ball. It makes sense, he’s already a fighter so he’d fit right in and he’s a massive part of Japanese culture, which is where the Smash games originated.
However, every Goku fan’s dreams have been shattered as the creator of the Smash series confirmed that the Saiyan will never be added to the game, stating that only characters from video games will be added to Smash.

I get all these kinds of requests from abroad like, “Where is my believed Iron Man?” or “where is my beloved Goku? ” However, basically (Smash) will only have content from video games in it. https://t.co/T4dhbfKEA6

On September 12, Japan’s game awards took place. This is where Sakurai spoke about the future of the Smash series and explained why certain characters won’t be in the game.
“I get all these kinds of requests from abroad like, where is my beloved Iron Man? Where is my beloved Goku? However, Smash will only have content from video games in it” said the game’s creator.
This also rules out a lot of potential characters that have appeared in films or TV shows before appearing in a game, however, fans may find solace in the fact that the series will stay true to its video game only origins.
